Labia correction

The reason to undergo a labia correction can be aesthetical as well as medical. A medical reason can be, for example, that you suffer from irritation during sports activities, walking, or cycling.

  • Treatment plan based on your complaints
  • Our plastic surgeons are affiliated with the Dutch Societies for plastic surgery (NVPC and NVEPC)
  • Both male and female surgeons

Plastic surgeons

During the first consultation, you and the attending plastic surgeon will discuss the labia corrective surgery. Our surgeons specialise in performing labiaplasty procedures and we will guide you through the preparation, the treatment itself, and the aftercare.

The surgery

The surgery can be performed under local anaesthesia as well as under general anaesthesia. With local anaesthesia, we administer a number of injections into the labia using a very thin needle, making sure that your labia feels numb.

The procedure takes about thirty minutes. During the procedure, the excess tissue of your labia will be removed and the small blood vessels will be seared. The plastic surgeon will stitch the wound area with dissolvable sutures.

After the surgery

You can leave the clinic a few hours after the surgery, but you need to arrange for someone to accompany you as you are not allowed to drive yourself.

After the surgery, especially during the first 24 hours, the labia can be swollen and painful. There may also be some bleeding. The swelling will go down after about one week. You can help reduce the swelling by using ice packs which you, after the surgery, place on the wound area for about 5 to 10 minutes every hour (make sure that you place a clean, thin (tea) towel between the skin and the ice pack). You also have to wash the treated area properly with water and dry it well. The first week after the surgery, you can shower the wound area twice a day. The first days after the surgery, you can also rinse the wound area with water after you have used the toilet.

Using some sanitary towels may be comfortable as they will feel soft and prevent staining your clothes. You have to make sure that you don’t sit in a slanted position and you should also not use an inflatable ring cushion to sit on, especially not during the first week as this will lead to extra swelling or irritation. If you experience some loss of blood, you can sit on a small cushion or rolled-up towel for ten minutes to stem the bleeding. You can take paracetamol If you experience pain.

The wound healing is a gradual process. There can be some swelling during the first few weeks after the surgery. The ultimate result of the labia correction will only be visible after about six weeks. This is the time it takes for the wound to heal optimally. The scars will be more or less invisible.

Most patients can resume their normal activities such as school and work a week after the surgery. You should avoid any scratching or rubbing the wound, as well as heavy exercising. You also need to refrain from sexual relations for four to five weeks.

Risks and complications

Complications with this type of surgery are very rare, but there is always a chance of complications such as an infection, bleeding, or an allergic reaction to the anaesthesia. You can avoid this risk by following the instructions of the plastic surgeon very strictly.

Although the procedure is performed with the greatest care by a highly experienced plastic surgeon, we can give no guarantee to the ultimate result. It is always possible to have a further corrective procedure carried out in consultation with the plastic surgeon.
