Eyelid correction (blepharoplasty)

During an eyelid correction procedure (blepharoplasty), we remove the excess skin around the eyes. A slackened skin of the upper eyelids creating skin creases can give a sense of fatigue and heaviness, limit the field of vision, and cause irritations to the skin and the eyes. Slackened and heavy upper eyelids can, in some cases, also cause headaches. A professional eyelid correction will restore your fresh and rested appearance.

  • Tightening of the slackened skin around your eyes
  • Treatment plan based on your complaints
  • Our plastic surgeons are affiliated with the Dutch Societies for plastic surgery (NVPC and NVEPC)
  • Both male and female surgeons

Plastic surgeons

During the first consultation, you and the attending plastic surgeon will discuss the eyelid correction. Our surgeons specialise in performing the eyelid corrective procedures and we will guide you through the preparation, the treatment itself, and the aftercare.

Types of eyelid corrections (blepharoplasty)

An eyelid correction, also called blepharoplasty, can be executed in several ways. Before the procedure, you will be carefully examined in order to get a good indication of your complaint and the possible treatment options. The surgeon will then propose the best way to conduct the surgery, based on this examination.

Upper eyelid correction

We can conduct an upper eyelid correction if you suffer from drooping eyelids and/or a tired look. The excess skin of the upper eyelid and the excess fat tissue will be removed by your plastic surgeon. The incision for this upper eyelid correction will fall just within the arcade arch, making the scar barely visible in time. The upper eyelid correction is performed under local anaesthesia.

Lower eyelid correction

If you suffer from bags underneath your eyes or drooping eyelids, we can conduct a lower eyelid correction. The surgeon removes the excess skin of the lower eyelid and the excess fat tissue. The incision for this lower eyelid correction will fall just within the lower lash line, making the scar barely visible in time. The lower eyelid correction is performed under local anaesthesia.

Last week, Dr Paula Roossink performed my eyelid correction. The ultimate result is not yet clearly visible, but from what I can see now, it will be beautiful. She is a great physician and I’m very satisfied with everything at EC Jan van Goyen.

During the treatment, the nurses were excellent as well. They hold your hand to make you feel at ease. Prior to the surgery, you get a letter with all the information you need about the eyelid correction and how to prepare for it.

The first consultation

It is important that you receive the right treatment and procedure. Therefore, the plastic surgeon determines whether your wishes for the eyelid correction are feasible during the first consultation. We will also go through the eyelid correction procedure and discuss the risks and recovery period. We will take photos for your medical file and discuss your medical history. It is important for the surgeon to know the state of your physical condition and whether you underwent previous surgery.

The surgery

The eyelid corrective surgery is carried out under local anaesthesia. Before the procedure starts, the plastic surgeon will meticulously mark where and which part of the skin can be removed. For an upper eyelid correction, the surgeon will then make a small incision in the crease of the skin of the upper eyelid. For a lower eyelid correction, the incision is made just below the lower lash line. With both procedures, the excess fat and skin of the eyelids are then removed. The combination of fat removal and tightening of the skin gives the optimal result. The plastic surgeon closes the incisions with sutures which will be removed when we first check the progress of the recovery.

Recovery time eyelid correction (blepharoplasty)

The first week after the surgery, you will experience bruising around the eyes and the eyelids may get swollen. This can last about seven to ten days after an upper eyelid correction was carried out. With a lower eyelid correction, it can last for up to two to three weeks. The ultimate result of the eyelid correction will be visible after approximately three months.

Frequently asked questions

We usually perform an eyelid correction under local anaesthesia. In some cases, a lower eyelid correction is more difficult to perform, or the surgery involves a combination of various procedures. This may be a reason to do the surgery under general anaesthesia. All this will be discussed during the first consultation.

Be sure to take sufficient rest after the surgery for your body to recover, so we advise you not to resume your work immediately. You can pick up your work activities at your own pace after a week. This means that you can go back to work after one week, depending on the type of work you do. You should not carry out any physically heavy work activities during the first four weeks. If you have a job that involves a great deal of physical work, please take into account that it may be up to four to six weeks before you can go back to work.

We advise you to wear glasses for the first week after the eyelid correction. The stitches will be removed from your eyelids after one week, and you can wear your eye lenses again when this has been done. Please make sure that you are able to place the eye lenses without having to pull your eyelids as this will inhibit the recovery process.
