Liposuction or liposculpture is the removal of abnormal fat deposits by means of suction. These fat deposits often occur at locations such as the neck, belly, hips, buttocks, upper legs, knees, and lower legs. With liposuction, we simply remove the accumulated fat at these locations. The fat deposits are caused by an increased number of fat cells. An important condition for liposuction is that the skin has sufficient elasticity.
The liposuction specialists at Aesthetic Centre Jan van Goyen:
- remove unwanted fat deposits
- make your body more balanced again
- plan your first consultation within two weeks
- have performed over 1,500 liposuctions
“There was no waiting list, so my liposuction treatment could be carried out at short notice. I was so sick of my love handles: no matter how hard I trained, I just couldn’t get rid of them. This was the only solution. I was quite nervous but the support was great. The result is even better than I dreamed it would be.”
“I couldn’t get rid of my belly fat. Due to my three pregnancies, I was stuck with that small ‘lump of belly’. It really bothered me. Dr Bouman helped me immensely, right from the start, and gave the right advice. Liposuction was the best solution and the result is wonderful.”
“My thighs remained heavy and didn’t match at all with the rest of my body. As I had lost a lot of weight and my upper body had become nice and tight, the balance was completely lost.”
During the first consultation, you and the attending plastic surgeon will discuss the liposuction procedure. Our surgeons specialise in performing the liposuction procedure and we will guide you through the preparation, the treatment itself, and the aftercare.

Reimbursement by the healt insurer
A liposuction treatment will only be covered by your basic or supplementary health insurance If you have a medical indication and when the fat deposits make it impossible to function properly. Additionally, the liposuction method must be the most effective method to help you with your complaints. When this is the case, the attending surgeon can give a statement for your health insurer. If you want to know whether your health insurer covers the liposuction, then please contact your health insurer prior to the first consultation. This will ensure that you will not be facing any unpleasant surprises.
Step 1: drawing the treatment area
Before we start the procedure, we will take photos for your medical file, you will be weighed and your body measurements will be taken. During the first consultation, you and the attending surgeon determined the treatment zones, and these will now be carefully marked. The plastic surgeon will also mark where the small incisions for the suction needles are to be made.
Step 2: administering the sedation
The treatment areas are sedated by injecting a sedation fluid. As soon as the sedation is effective, we make the incisions. The tumescent sedation fluid is injected with a fine needle. This fluid constricts the blood vessels so the amount of bleeding during the procedure will be minimal. It also strengthens the effects of the local anaesthesia so you will hardly notice anything during the procedure.
Step 3: suction of fat
After the absorption time of 20 minutes, the surgeon will use a fine suction needle to remove the fat cells. The surgeon feels the skin during the suction process. This enables him to determine whether enough fat has been removed. The needles are connected to a vacuum pump that sucks away the fat. The treatment is painless, but you can experience some pressure in the treatment area. The duration of the treatment depends on the number of treatment zones. In most cases, it will take between 1 and 2.5 hours.
Recovery and aftercare liposuction
After the procedure, the small incisions are covered with plasters. In most cases, these incisions are so small that they do not need stitching. If some small stitches are required, we will remove them after one week when we check the recovery process.
You can go home the same day. Please be aware that you are not allowed to drive yourself, so you should arrange for someone who can help you to get home. The first few hours you will feel hardly any or no pain at all. This is because the tumescent fluid will continue to have its sedative effect for a few hours. When the effect wears off, you can take some paracetamol to suppress any pain.
Risks and complications
As our plastic surgeons have many years of experience, complications are very rare. Nevertheless, it is important for you to be aware of the possible risks after the procedure:
- Allergic reaction
- Wound that is not healing as it should
- Irregular skin surface
- Discolouring of the skin after bruising and fluid accumulation
Frequently asked questions
WHEN AM I ELIGIBLE FOR LIPOSUCTION?
In principle, anyone can undergo a liposuction treatment, but it is important that your Body Mass Index (BMI) is not above 30. This is because liposuction is not a suitable way to lose weight quickly.
HOW LONG DOES THE PROCEDURE TAKE?
The duration of the treatment depends on the amount of fat we remove. Generally speaking, the procedure takes one to two hours.
WILL LIPOSUCTION LEAVE ME WITH VISIBLE SCARS?
To remove the fat tissue, we will make small incisions of about three millimetres, so the scars will not be bigger than this. During the healing process, the scars will fade and become practically invisible.
WHAT IS THE RECOVERY TIME?
The total recovery time after the procedure takes up six to nine months. We advise you to take sufficient rest during the first two weeks, but you can do light work activities. You can resume more intensive exercises and sports and pick up your heavier physical work activities after four weeks.
WHICH AREAS ARE MOSTLY TREATED WITH WOMEN?
Most women choose liposuction on the following treatment zones: the outside of the legs, the flanks (love handles), the inside of the legs, and for the removal of excess belly fat.
WHICH AREAS ARE MOSTLY TREATED WITH MEN?
Generally, men choose liposuction to treat the flanks (love handles), for the removal of belly fat and for liposuction of the back.
