Varicose veins: question & answer

Or call us for an appointment: 020 305 5847

More than 25% of the population suffers from varicose veins. Varicose veins are twisting blood vessels that are often visible through the skin. They can be very small blood vessels or larger dilated vessels that are visible as strands. Varicose vein treatment can prevent worse. This month we made a call on social media to our followers to ask us their questions about varicose vein treatments. Phlebologists Dr. Marije Kroon and Drs. Casper van Waveren and vascular surgeon Dr. Clarissa van Vlijmen provide answers to the most frequently asked questions in this article.

Is there anything I can do myself to prevent varicose veins?

Dr. Marije Kroon: 'It is often hereditary, so there is nothing you can do about it. If you work in the hospitality industry and are on your feet a lot, you can get varicose veins faster. However, that is not always due to working in the hospitality industry, because you can also have a predisposition for it through heredity.'

What does a duplex study entail?

drs. Casper van Waveren: 'To determine which treatment produces the best result for you, we carry out a duplex examination during the first consultation. During this examination, the blood vessels in the legs are properly visualized and we measure the functioning of the valves. After an appointment you know exactly what to expect and which treatment is most suitable.'

Do you mainly see women or also men with varicose veins?

Dr. Clarissa van Vlijmen: 'We see a lot more women than men with varicose veins. Men often see that there is something wrong, but do not think that they have such complaints that they have to go to the doctor. They also think it looks less ugly than women think of their legs with varicose veins. Men put it off until it really bothers them. But it is actually already too late, because then the varicose veins are very large and more extensive treatment will be required.'
