Pressing questions about varicose veins

Varicose veins are tortuous veins on the legs in which the valves no longer close properly. Timely treatment of varicose veins relieves complaints such as painful, tired legs and fluid retention. Also, many people find visible veins on the legs disfiguring. At Aesthetic Center Jan van Goyen, a team of dermatologists, phlebologists and vascular surgeons works closely together on a fast, efficient treatment against varicose veins. All treatments are offered.

To determine which varicose vein treatment gives you the best results, the doctors perform a duplex examination during the first consultation. During this examination, the blood vessels in the legs are well visualized and they measure the functioning of the valves. This is done using ultrasound and color Doppler (duplex of the blood vessels). After an appointment you know exactly what to expect!

Yet we notice that there are also questions before anyone dares to take the step to see a doctor. Many people do not know what to expect and find it exciting to have varicose veins treated.  Dermatologist and phlebologist Annigje Jensema gives you answers to the most frequently asked questions.

Unfortunately, it is not possible to prevent varicose veins. If you're predisposed to it, you'll eventually get varicose veins. When this happens is partly genetically determined and partly dependent on other factors such as pregnancy, a lot of standing during work or old age. There are ways to delay the development of varicose veins and reduce the symptoms. For example, wearing compression stockings, a healthy weight and sufficient exercise help.

Due to the latest techniques, extensive surgery on the varicose veins is no longer necessary: we switch off the varicose veins from the inside. The most common treatment is Sclerocompression Therapy and this treatment has virtually no downtime. You can go back to work the next day. Other common treatments are: the laser treatment and Phlebectomy according to Muller. All treatments are outpatient. After the treatment it is necessary to wear long stockings. For how long is told before the treatment.

With a referral, the first consultation and duplex examination are reimbursed. At the end of the first consultation, all treatment options are discussed. Then you know exactly what will or will not be reimbursed.

It is not a problem to treat varicose veins in the summer. However, many people prefer spring, autumn or winter. This mainly has to do with the stockings that you have to wear after the treatment. Sometimes up to two weeks after the treatment. In addition, it is not wise to expose the legs to sunlight immediately after a treatment. Discoloration can occur in places where the fluid has been injected into the veins. It is therefore recommended to stay out of the sun for four weeks. Of course you can also wear long summer pants or a long skirt, then you won't be bothered by anything!

Are you curious which treatment suits you best? Then make an appointment for a consultation with a specialist.
