A tummy tuck is a relatively major procedure and it is therefore advisable to be well informed in advance. Bee Aesthetic Center Jan van Goyen we only encourage this! We think it is important that our patients know how the operation will proceed, what the recovery period entails and what the expected result will be. Based on this information you can make an informed choice.
Because we speak to people who are considering a tummy tuck every day, our plastic surgeons regularly hear the same questions. We have listed the top 10 most frequently asked questions for you.
1. When am I eligible for a tummy tuck?
If you suffer from excess skin on the abdomen, a tummy tuck may offer a solution. However, there are some criteria that the patient must meet to be eligible for this procedure.
1. Your BMI must be under 34. With a higher BMI, the risks and possible complications increase.
2. Your overall health should be good. Do you have any medical conditions, such as heart or lung problems, diabetes or high blood pressure? Then discuss with a plastic surgeon to what extent you are eligible for a tummy tuck.
3. You don't smoke. Smoking can slow the healing process and increase the risk of complications. Our advice is therefore to stop smoking at least 6 weeks before the operation.
Are you curious whether you are eligible? You are very welcome to join us a no-obligation consultation. Based on your initial situation, the doctor will determine whether the tummy tuck is a suitable operation to achieve your desired result.
2. How long will a stable weight last for a tummy tuck?
The advice of our plastic surgeons is to have a stable weight for at least 6 months before the operation takes place. Weight fluctuations can affect the result of the tummy tuck after the operation and that is of course a shame. It is therefore advisable to have a stable weight for some time before the operation. This way you can be sure that this weight can remain stable for the long term and you can enjoy the results for a long period of time!
3. How many kilos does one lose with a tummy tuck?
Unfortunately, it is a myth that a tummy tuck is a way to lose weight. The primary goal of a tummy tuck is not to lose weight, but to improve the contour of the abdomen. Any weight loss after this procedure is usually limited to the weight of the removed skin and fat tissue. The exact weight loss varies from patient to patient, depending on factors such as the amount of excess skin and fat. In general, this is not a significant amount and a tummy tuck therefore does not offer a solution if you would like to lose weight.
4. How much does a tummy tuck cost?
At Esthetisch Centrum Jan van Goyen, an abdominoplasty costs €8,250. A mini-abdominoplasty costs €4,800. During your first consultation, a quotation will be prepared for you based on your personal situation. You can read more about the costs here. here.
5. Can I be reimbursed for a tummy tuck?
In general, this procedure is not reimbursed by health insurers. In most cases, the tummy tuck is considered a cosmetic procedure and this means that you are not entitled to compensation. Exceptions to this are possible, for example when a doctor determines that there is a medical necessity. We advise you to consult your GP if you think you may be entitled to compensation. He or she will then refer you.
6. How painful is a tummy tuck?
After surgery you will experience some degree of pain and discomfort, but overall the pain is not too bad. However, the pain varies from person to person and depends on several factors. In principle, the fitter you are before the procedure, the less discomfort you will experience after the procedure.
Because the area around the abdominal wound is initially numb, you will experience little to no pain. When the diastasis rectus has also been resolved during the operation (stretching of the abdominal muscles), you will notice that your abdominal muscles feel a bit uncomfortable during the first few weeks. Sneezing, straining and laughing can cause pain during this time. Fortunately, this pain subsides quickly.
7. How risky is a tummy tuck?
A tummy tuck is generally a safe procedure, but every surgical procedure carries some degree of risk. Risks include the risk of infection, bleeding and impaired wound healing. Although these complications rarely occur, we believe it is important that you are well informed about them. The doctor will therefore discuss all risks and possible complications with you during a no-obligation consultation.
8. What is the difference between a tummy tuck and a mini tummy tuck?
A mini tummy tuck is a less extensive procedure than a tummy tuck. You are eligible for this if you only have excess skin below the navel and little to no muscle weakness in the abdominal muscles. The recovery time is shorter and the scar is smaller because it is a less extensive procedure. Your belly button also remains in the same place.
A regular tummy tuck focuses on the entire abdominal area. This procedure involves removing excess skin and fat, tightening the abdominal muscles and repositioning the belly button. If you suffer from significant excess skin and muscle weakness in your abdominal muscles, you are probably more likely to be eligible for a regular tummy tuck.
Are you unsure about the type of tummy tuck that can give you the desired result? We understand that like no other. During a consultation, the doctor can explain exactly what the difference is. He or she will also tell you which type of procedure will give you the intended result.
9. How long to rest after a tummy tuck?
After a tummy tuck, it is advisable to rest for a few days in bed after an overnight stay in the hospital to recover. This may vary depending on personal circumstances and the extent of the operation. However, it is important that you keep moving. The advice is therefore to regularly walk around indoors and put your legs up when you lie or sit for a longer period of time.
During the first two weeks after the procedure, you cannot do much independently. So you will notice that you automatically take a lot of rest. After two to four weeks you may resume physical light work. Do you have a sedentary job? Then people are usually back to work after one to two weeks.
10. How long does recovery take after a tummy tuck?
You should allow approximately six weeks for recovery. However, this does not mean that you cannot do anything for six weeks. During the first few weeks you walk slightly bent over and are not allowed to do any physical work, but after the first weeks you build up this again. You will notice that the recovery will proceed smoothly if you adhere to the rules of life given to you by the doctor. After six weeks you should experience virtually no discomfort or discomfort.

Dr. Hay Winters
After completing his medical studies at the universities of Ghent and Nijmegen, Dr. Winters trained in general surgery at the Diaconessen Hospital in Eindhoven and the Sint Lucas Hospital in Amsterdam. Subsequently, he specialized in plastic surgery, and after his registration in 1994, Hay Winters focused further on complex reconstructive procedures: primarily of the face and breasts (for example, after the removal of a tumor), but also of the trunk, arms, or legs (likewise after the removal of malignant lesions or following serious accidents). From his passion for reconstructive surgery arose an interest in aesthetic surgery, as he realized that the wish of a patient with a severe disfigurement is essentially the same as the wish of a 'cosmetic' patient: both want an appearance in which they can feel comfortable. His expertise in reconstructive surgery proves to be a great advantage in the practice of aesthetic surgery, particularly when it concerns the breasts or the face. Treatments You can consult Dr. Hay Winters for various types of plastic surgical procedures: Facelift; Armlift; Leglift; Buttocklift; Eyelid correction: upper and lower eyelid correction; Breast surgery: prosthesis exchange, explantation, breast augmentation, lift, and reduction; Abdominal wall correction; Gynecomastia; Hand surgery; Ear and earlobe correction; Labia correction; Lipofilling and liposuction; Scar correction; Skin excision. Plastic surgeon since 1994. Since 1994, Hay Winters has been affiliated with the VU Medical Center as a plastic surgeon, and in 2003, he joined the Department of Plastic Surgery at the Aesthetic Center Amsterdam. More about Dr. Hay Winters. Hay Winters conducts scientific research and publishes articles in international scientific journals. In 2007, he obtained his PhD on the transplantation of vascularized bone from the pelvis and leg for the reconstruction of severe bone defects (lower and upper jaw, spine, arms, and legs). Due to his academic background, he is regularly invited to give lectures both domestically and abroad. As a lecturer, he is involved in continuing education courses for plastic surgeons, as well as for general surgeons, ENT specialists, maxillofacial surgeons, orthopedic surgeons, and rehabilitation physicians. Furthermore, colleagues from home and abroad regularly invite him as a guest surgeon. After participating in the TV program 'De Grootmeesters' in 2005 at the request of the Dutch Society for Plastic Surgery, Hay Winters was voted the best reconstructive surgeon in the Netherlands by both the professional jury and the public.
