Tummy tuck

Do you suffer from excess skin or sagging skin on your abdomen? Usually this is due to weight loss, pregnancy or aging. A tummy tuck offers the solution for this. The result: a tighter stomach and your self-confidence back! We would be happy to tell you more during a no-obligation consultation.

The weakening of the abdomen is something that occurs naturally in every person. This depends on age, gender, physique, body weight and any operations or pregnancies. A tummy tuck restores the abdomen to its original state and ensures a flatter and tighter abdomen.

A tummy tuck can be performed for medical or aesthetic reasons. Due to slackening and stretching of the abdominal muscles in combination with excess weight, the spine can be loaded incorrectly. This can cause back problems in the long run. A less serious form of sagging, such as a somewhat bulging lower abdomen or wrinkled lower abdominal skin, may also be a reason to consider an abdominoplasty. Whatever your reason, you are in good hands with us for advice without obligation.

The consultation

Whether you are a suitable candidate for a tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, depends on your complaints and this will be established during the first consultation with the plastic surgeon. Surgical correction of a thick or slackened tummy must not be seen as a way of losing weight. Overweight or obesity can even be an argument for not performing such a surgery because of the increased risk of complications. If you are clearly too heavy, we advise you to lose weight first and adjust your diet. If you have reached your weight goal, the tummy tuck can be carried out with a good chance of a beautiful result.

Abdominoplasty: the operation

The surgery is performed under general anaesthesia. The correction involves the removal of excess skin and fat tissue and, when necessary, the restoration of the firmness of the abdominal wall. The plastic surgeon will conduct the procedure in such a way that the scars will be minimally visible. Whenever it is feasible, there will only be a horizontal scar, as low as possible on the lower abdomen, so the scar can be covered by your underwear. Depending on the scope of the surgery, we will advise you to have a few days of bed rest afterwards. You will always spend the first night after the surgery at the Jan van Goyen Clinic.

Recovery and aftercare after a tummy tuck

The first few weeks, you will be able to do only very light physical work. If the surgery also involved a shortening or tightening of the abdominal wall muscles, we advise you to avoid heavy lifting during the first 4 weeks. Ultraviolet radiation is not good for scars, it may cause them to stay red for an unnecessarily long time. We advise you to keep the scars covered during the first months after the surgery or to apply sunblock.

The result

The result of a tummy tuck is that you will have a flatter tummy. Even though the plastic surgeon will always aim for perfection, this is not always achievable, as everybody is different and reacts differently. The surgery will leave scars that will always be slightly visible. The skin area beneath the belly button will feel numb for some time. In some cases, this remains numb, but this will hardly cause any complaints. Over time, the area that feels numb can become smaller.

Risks and Complications

A tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, poses the same risks and any other surgery. The wound can become infected, although this is very rare. People who have too much subcutaneous fat tissue run the biggest risk of an infection. It is, therefore, important to have a weight that is as close to normal as possible before the operation. There can also be some amount of bleeding.

Overweight or obesity, smoking, the use of some types of medication, and diabetes can lead to a disturbed healing of the wound and can be reasons for the surgeon to decide that the surgery cannot be carried out.

When it concerns an abdominoplasty over a relatively large area, the surgeon will perform the surgery in a hospital as an admittance of several days is more preferable than outpatient surgery.

Frequently asked questions about the tummy tuck

Are you considering this procedure and do you have any questions about it? Then you may find the answer below.

When is one eligible for a tummy tuck?

A tummy tuck, also known as abdominoplasty, is a surgical procedure performed to remove excess skin and fatty tissue from the abdomen and, if there is a rectus diastasis, the abdominal muscles can be put back together. . Not everyone is eligible for a tummy tuck and there are certain criteria that must be met. The following factors play a role in this:

1. Weight and BMI. It is important that you have reached a stable weight before this procedure is performed. To be eligible for an abdominoplasty, the BMI must be below 34.

2. General health. You must be in good health. Do you have any medical conditions such as heart and lung problems, high blood pressure or diabetes? Then discuss with the plastic surgeon whether you are eligible for a tummy tuck.

3 .Smoking. Do you smoke? Smoking can slow down the healing process and cause complications. We therefore recommend that you stop smoking for at least 6 weeks before considering this procedure.

4. Children. Do you want to have children? Then we do not recommend that you undergo a tummy tuck before your pregnancy. Pregnancy and childbirth can affect the results of the tummy tuck.

5. Realistic expectations: It is important that you have realistic expectations of the results of an abdominoplasty and that you understand that it is a surgical procedure with risks and limitations. By discussing your wishes with the surgeon, you will discover whether your expectations of this procedure are realistic.

Does the excess skin on your abdomen bother you and are you curious whether you are eligible for a tummy tuck? Then book a no-obligation consultation with one of our doctors to determine whether this procedure is suitable for your personal situation.

How painful is a tummy tuck?

A tummy tuck is a surgical procedure and it is expected that you will experience some degree of pain and discomfort after the surgery. However, the intensity of the pain can vary from person to person and depends on several factors, including the type of abdominoplasty you are undergoing, your pain threshold and the general health of your body. In general, we hear from patients that the pain has been much better than expected.

What is a mini tummy tuck?

A mini tummy tuck is aimed at correcting a protruding abdomen below the navel. It is a less extensive procedure than a full tummy tuck and is suitable for people with a small amount of excess skin and little to no muscle weakness. So it is, as the term suggests, a tummy tuck in a smaller form. With a mini abdominoplasty, the incision is smaller and therefore a smaller scar remains after the operation.

A mini tummy tuck can be performed under local anesthesia or under general anesthesia, depending on the patient's preference and the extent of the procedure. The recovery after a mini abdominoplasty is generally faster than that of a full abdominoplasty.

What is a good BMI for a tummy tuck?

There is no specific BMI level that determines whether or not someone is a candidate for a tummy tuck. However, it is important to understand that a tummy tuck is not a weight loss method. Instead, it is a surgical procedure performed to remove excess skin and fatty tissue from the abdomen and lift the rectus diastasis if necessary. usually after weight loss or pregnancy. An operation like this carries more risks and complications if the patient is overweight. An abdominoplasty can be performed with a BMI below 34. Having a healthy BMI helps to reduce the risk of complications during and after surgery.

How long should I have a stable weight?

In an ideal situation, you have a stable weight for at least 6 months to 1 year before the abdominoplasty takes place. The result of the tummy tuck can be influenced by weight fluctuations. Doctors will therefore recommend that you have a stable weight for some time before considering this procedure, to ensure that you can enjoy the result for a long time.

How long do I have to recover after a tummy tuck?

Recovery time after a tummy tuck can vary depending on the individual and the type of surgery performed. In general, the recovery process after a tummy tuck takes 4 to 6 weeks, after which the discomfort and pain will largely disappear and you can resume daily activities.

The recovery of the abdominal wall can take up to a year, but during this time you can generally do everything you did before the operation. Think of sports, work and household chores. After the first 6 weeks, although your body is still recovering, you will experience little or no hindrance.

How long do I have to stay at home after a tummy tuck?

After a tummy tuck, it is generally recommended to stay at home for at least 2 weeks to recover. This may vary depending on personal circumstances and the extent of the operation. In any case, keep in mind that you will take at least 2 weeks off to recover at home in peace.

During this time it is important to avoid physical activity and (heavy) lifting to promote healing and reduce the risk of complications. It is also important to follow your plastic surgeon's instructions regarding medication and wound care.

After 2 weeks you can usually resume light activities such as walking and light household chores. After 4 to 6 weeks you can usually resume other physical activity, but you will see that you build up naturally again. It is important to remember that the recovery process is different for each individual and it is important to follow your plastic surgeon's instructions for a safe and effective recovery.

How long is bed rest after a tummy tuck?

After a tummy tuck, it is advisable to have at least 2 to 3 days of bed rest after the overnight stay in the hospital to recover. This may vary depending on personal circumstances and the extent of the operation.

After these first few days of bed rest, it may be necessary to take it easy for a few more days and gradually build up activity. It is important not to overdo it and to listen to the body's signals to avoid delaying healing. During the first week, make sure that you regularly walk around the house and put your legs up regularly. This stimulates blood flow and reduces the risk of swelling around your wound.

What are you not allowed to do after a tummy tuck?

After a tummy tuck, there are several activities you should avoid for 4 to 6 weeks to promote a safe and effective recovery. These include:

  1. Heavy physical activity. Avoid activities that require a lot of physical exertion, such as running, lifting weights or strenuous sports. You should not lift or push with your arms, abs or chest. This will prevent tension on the wound. Please note that this also means that you cannot lift young children and that you will need help with care during the first weeks after surgery.
  2. Sitting or standing for long periods of time. Prolonged sitting or standing after a tummy tuck can make swelling and pain worse. Therefore, try to move regularly and elevate your legs to reduce swelling. You are not yet able to move intensively, but you can walk a short distance and move your legs up and down when lying down.
  3. Smoking and alcohol. Smoking and alcohol can affect the healing process and increase the risk of complications. We therefore advise you to stop smoking and drinking alcohol.
  4. Take a bath. By taking a warm bath, the wound becomes soft and you want to prevent this during the first 6 weeks. It is also important to avoid sources of heat as this can aggravate the swelling. Think not only of a warm bath, but also of the sauna or solarium.

During your recovery period, it is important to listen to your body's signals and follow the advice of your plastic surgeon. Remember that the recovery process is different for everyone and you should focus on rest and a healthy lifestyle to aid recovery.

How long not to shower after a tummy tuck?

We recommend not showering during the first few days after the abdominoplasty. This will protect the wound from infection. It is important to keep the wound clean. Follow the instructions of your plastic surgeon carefully. Do you have questions about this after the operation? Then of course you can always contact us by phone.

Once you are allowed to shower again, make sure you clean the wound and the area around it gently and don't apply too much pressure. Use a mild, unscented soap and warm water to avoid irritating the skin.

How long to walk bent over after a tummy tuck?

The first 1 to 2 weeks after the tummy tuck you will have to walk slightly stooped to avoid tension on the wound. This means that you should not straighten your torso and should move carefully so as not to strain your abdominal muscles too much.

After the first week, your plastic surgeon may advise you to slowly start stretching your trunk and walking upright again. It is important to listen to your body and not to push too much. You can gradually become more upright as your body and wound heal.

How long can I not drive after a tummy tuck?

After an abdominoplasty, it is important not to drive for the first few days after surgery, as the surgery and associated medications can affect your reaction time and concentration. When you are able to safely drive a car again, differs per person. Please note that this usually takes at least a week.

A tip: check what your car insurance says about driving after a tummy tuck. Many insurance companies have included in their terms and conditions that you are not insured in the event of an accident for 6 weeks after such an operation. This is because the wound can prevent you from adopting a safe position behind the wheel. Of course you don't assume that anything will happen along the way, but it is good to check this in advance to avoid unpleasant surprises when something does occur.

What are the costs of a tummy tuck?

The costs of a tummy tuck at Aesthetic Center Jan van Goyen depend on the type of operation and the complexity of the procedure. A mini tummy tuck is already possible from € 3,850, an extensive tummy tuck including overnight stay is possible from € 7,000.

Is abdominoplasty covered by my health insurer?

A tummy tuck is almost always considered a cosmetic procedure and is therefore generally not reimbursed by your health insurer. Exceptions are possible, for example when the operation is medically necessary. Consult your GP if you are unsure whether there may be a medical necessity in your situation.

What is the difference between a tummy tuck and liposuction?

A tummy tuck is a plastic surgery procedure that removes excess skin and fatty tissue and tightens the abdominal muscles. The purpose of this is to create a tighter abdomen without excess skin. This is an effective treatment for people who suffer from excess skin after weight loss or pregnancy.

Liposuction, on the other hand, is a cosmetic surgical procedure that removes unwanted fat but leaves the skin untouched. The goal of liposuction is to create a slimmer and more streamlined appearance by removing unwanted fatty tissue. Liposuction is generally not suitable for people who suffer from excess skin or a flaccid or stretched abdominal muscle.

These two procedures therefore have different goals, but both can be used to change the appearance of your abdomen. Do you suffer from excess skin and would you like to have fat removed? Then it is possible to combine a tummy tuck with liposuction. Present this to the plastic surgeon during a no-obligation consultation.

Do I stay overnight in the hospital after a tummy tuck?

With a mini tummy tuck you can usually go home the same day. With a full abdominoplasty you will stay overnight in the hospital. Whether or not you stay overnight after the operation therefore depends on the type of operation you are undergoing.

During a no-obligation consultation, it will become clear which intervention is suitable for your starting situation. Your plastic surgeon will therefore immediately inform you about what you can expect and whether or not you have to stay in the hospital after the operation.
