Rhinoplasty: The 10 most frequently asked questions

Rhinoplasty is one of the most commonly performed cosmetic procedures in the world. In many cases, this procedure is performed for aesthetic reasons, but breathing problems can also be the reason for a rhinoplasty. Aesthetic Center Jan van Goyen is nose correction a frequently performed procedure. Our specialist Dr. Lenka Vermeeren sees men and women every day who are considering a nose job.

The decision to undergo a nose job often raises many questions. In this article, we have listed the answers to the 10 most frequently asked questions about nose jobs for you. Do you still have questions after reading this article? You are always welcome for a free consultation.

1. How much does a nose job cost?

A rhinoplasty is available with us starting from €5,800. The price of your rhinoplasty depends on the type of procedure and the complexity of the operation. After the consultation with Dr. Lenka Vermeeren, you will receive a no-obligation quote from us.

You can find more information about the costs of a nose correction on the page 'Prices of a nose job'.

2. Is a nose correction reimbursed?

A nose job will only be reimbursed by your health insurer if there is a medical necessity. This is the case, for example, in the case of breathing problems or damage to the nose due to an accident or injury, which leads to deformation or functional limitations. If you decide to undergo a nose correction for aesthetic reasons, this will not be reimbursed by the health insurer.

3. Do I have to stay overnight after the operation?

No, after the operation you can go home the same day. You do not have to stay overnight in the Medical Center. However, you are not allowed to drive home yourself, so make sure someone comes to pick you up.

4. How long does recovery take after a nose job?

In general, recovery after a nose job is 6 weeks, but this varies from patient to patient. Usually, you can do almost everything again after the first 2 weeks, but with intensive sports, for example, you should wait a little longer.

The nose is healing for a year and has reached the final result after a year. Physically you are recovering for about 6 weeks, but the nose needs a longer period to heal completely. Fortunately, this does not hinder you in your daily activities; after 6 weeks you will have few to no limitations.

5. What are nasal tampons?

After the operation, the doctor places a ribbon tampon on each side of the nose, also called nasal tampons called. Nasal tampons are used after rhinoplasty to reduce bleeding, reduce swelling, provide internal support to the healing nasal structures, and prevent adhesions of the nasal mucosa.

The nasal tampons can cause sneezing fits. Our advice is to suppress the sneeze as much as possible. If this doesn't work, sneeze with your mouth open. This creates as little pressure as possible on the nose.

6. How long do I wear the nasal tampons?

The nasal tampons are usually removed the day after surgery. The exact day may vary, but you will always receive this appointment confirmation on the day of surgery. So you know in advance how long you will have to wear the nasal tampons.

7. How to sleep after a nose job?

During the first weeks after the operation, it may be helpful to sleep with your head a little higher, for example by placing two pillows under your head. This prevents engorgement. However, do you prefer to sleep flat or on your side? This is also possible. As long as you avoid sleeping on your stomach, your sleeping position will not affect your recovery.

8. When can I exercise again?

2 weeks after the nose job you can resume sports activities that require relatively little effort. This includes walking, stretching and cycling. However, keep in mind that you are recovering and that you listen to your body's signals.

Are you doing more intensive sports? Fitness, contact sports and ball sports are not recommended for the first 6 weeks. You can build this up after 6 weeks, at a leisurely pace.

9. When will I be presentable again?

In many patients, we can hardly see that he or she has had surgery in the face after 14 days. So you will be presentable again 2 weeks after the nose correction.

10. When will the final result be visible?

Within 3 to 4 months after the nose job, the nose will have started to form more and more and the final result will be visible. The real final result is achieved after one year, until then the nose is still healing.

Jeffry's nose job: Still happy with his nose after 10 years

Jeffry works as a consultant at the Jan van Goyen Aesthetic Center and decided 10 years ago to have his nose operated on by Prof. Dr. Gijs Nolst Trenité. We asked Jeffry if he is still satisfied with the result, to which he answered a resounding "yes." Curious about his story? You can read it here. Why did you consider a nose correction? 'I personally felt my nose was a bit too coarse for my face. There wasn't much shape to my nose, and the tip was asymmetrical and angular; I wanted to refine this. I work with Prof. Dr. Nolst Trenité and have seen many satisfied patients, which made the decision to undergo a nose correction easier. He really treated me as a patient and we looked in the mirror together. I didn't have to say anything; he actually articulated exactly what I had in mind.' How do you remember the surgery? 'I was operated on at Jan van Goyen Kade no. 1, where I experienced a homely atmosphere. I liked that the doctor stopped by briefly before I was operated on.' I can still clearly remember getting a pat on the head from the professor, and he said: "Just dream sweetly about a nice vacation." I woke up, and the operation was over in no time; I didn't notice a thing myself. Most patients I speak to during my work experience no pain. I felt a very slight burning sensation at the scar, but it wasn't painful at all. Apart from that, I didn't experience any pain either. I went home; the first night I didn't sleep very well and didn't sleep as soundly because of the nasal packing. Fortunately, the nasal packing could be removed the very next day. Then I could immediately see what the underside of my nose looked like; it was instantly much more symmetrical. Of course, I couldn't see the rest because of the splint on the bridge of my nose.' Are you satisfied with the result? 'A week later, the splint could come off too. I immediately saw a refined nose, but because it was right after the operation, the nose was still swollen, particularly the tip. It took about 12 months for the final result to become fully visible for me. 'I am really very satisfied with the result; my nose is now much more defined. To my surprise, I could also breathe better through my nose, which was a very nice bonus.' The surgery was 10 years ago. Would you do it again? 'I would definitely do it again if I look back on it. The recovery went smoothly, and after 10 years, I am still very happy with the result.' Are you also considering a nose correction? You are not alone.
