Are you considering having your breast implants replaced, for example, due to wear and tear, capsule formation, or a desire for a different size or shape? This page explains what to expect from the surgery.
Preparing for surgery
During the initial consultation, the plastic surgeon will thoroughly discuss your wishes, your health, and your medical history. Based on this, they will assess whether a prosthesis replacement is the right and safe choice for you. They will also discuss in detail which type and size of implants best meet your expectations.
In addition, during the consultation you will receive practical advice for the period before the operation, such as quitting smoking and fasting on the day of the operation.
The procedure will take place in our brand new operating room and will be scheduled with you well in advance.
Conversation with the anesthetist
A prosthesis replacement is performed under general anesthesia. Therefore, you will speak with the anesthesiologist beforehand. During this consultation, your health and medication use will be discussed, and you will complete a medical questionnaire. This ensures that the anesthesia is administered carefully and safely.
The day of the operation
On the day of your surgery, you will report to our surgery center. You will be greeted by our team and escorted to the preparation room. Here, you will have the opportunity to ask your plastic surgeon any questions you may have. We believe it's important that you go into your surgery without any questions or concerns.
After marking the surgical area, you will be taken to the operating room and put under anesthesia so that you do not notice anything of the procedure.
The plastic surgeon opens the breast through a small incision in the inframammary fold. The existing scar is often used to prevent new scars from forming. First, the old implants are removed. If necessary, capsular tissue is also removed. Then, the surgeon inserts the new implants, entirely according to the decision made during the consultation.
The operation takes on average one and a half to two hoursDepending on the situation and any additional corrections, such as a breast lift, the wounds are carefully closed and covered, and a supportive bandage is applied if necessary.
After the procedure
Afterwards, you'll wake up peacefully in the recovery room. You can usually return home the same day, but you won't be allowed to drive yourself. Please arrange for someone to pick you up.
Drains
Sometimes drains are inserted to drain excess wound fluid. These are usually removed the next morning. For more complex procedures, such as an implant replacement combined with a breast lift, an overnight stay may be necessary. The doctor will always discuss this with you beforehand.
Possible complications
As with any surgery, there are risks, such as infection, postoperative bleeding, capsular contracture, or wound healing problems. These risks will be carefully discussed with you during your consultation. Should anything unexpected occur after the surgery, you can count on us 24/7. As a subsidiary of OLVG, you always have access to the best medical care, even outside office hours.
