Preparing for a breast augmentation

It is important that you know what preparation for a breast augmentation you can meet. A breast enlargement operation has a major impact on your body. With proper preparation, you can positively influence your recovery after the procedure. A number of factors that are important during the preparation:

  • The decision regarding the size of your breasts
  • Stop smoking for the best recovery process
  • Refrain from taking blood thinning medication (in consultation with the specialist)
  • Reduce the intake of alcohol

Conditions

Nearly all women can have breast augmentation surgery. There are a few conditions that apply:

  • You are older than 18
  • You are not pregnant at the time of the breast augmentation
  • You do not breastfeed
  • Your health is in optimal condition

Decise on the size of your new breasts and the position of the prosthesis

The plastic surgeon together with you determine the ideal size of your new breasts. You will also discuss with your plastic surgeon whether your wish corresponds to the technical possibilities.

During the first consultation, the position of the implant(s) and the location of the scar will be discussed. There are two options regarding the position of the implant: underneath the gland tissue or (partially) behind the chest wall muscle. The chosen location will depend on the thickness of your gland tissue.

Preparing for surgery

We give you a number of tips to ensure that your body is in optimal condition for the breast augmentation.

No alcohol

Drinking alcohol can significantly increase the risk of bruising or bleeding. That is why we recommend that you refrain from drinking alcohol from at least two weeks prior to the breast augmentation surgery.

Stop smoking

Smoking increases the risk of capsular contraction around the breast implants and can cause other wound issues. This is because nicotine has an adverse effect on the recovery process and even increases the chance of infections. That is why we strongly advise that you stop smoking from at least six weeks prior to the surgery and to maintain this until at least six weeks afterwards. It goes without saying that to quit smoking altogether is best for your health.

No blood thinners medication

Taking blood thinning medication can have an adverse effect on breast augmentation surgery. Naturally, it differs per person whether there is an absolute necessity to take this medication. We, therefore, request that you discuss this with your plastic surgeon as to if and when you need to stop taking the blood thinners prior to the surgery. The following guidelines are generally applied:

  • Aspirin: stop seven days before surgery
  • Sintrom(mitis): stop three days before surgery

If you have any further questions about how to prepare for a breast augmentation, you can always check our frequently asked questions page or contact us directly.

On the day of the operation: light nightwear

On the first day, our nurses at the clinic will look after you and it is important that they can easily clean the wounds. We recommend that you bring nightwear that closes at the front so you can remain lying down while they do that. After the surgery, we will give you a sports bra. This bra offers the right amount of support to your breasts and is suitable for the optimal healing of the scars. You need to wear this bra day and night during the first four to six weeks. After this period, you only need to wear your bra during the day.
