Medical tattooing of the skin is also called dermatography The technique is similar to cosmetic tattooing. However, the skin being tattooed is often damaged, for example, by scar tissue or radiation.
At Esthetisch Centrum Jan van Goyen, dermatography is used for nipple reconstructions. After breast surgery such as amputation or reconstruction, a nipple may be missing or damaged. By means of dermatography, a new nipple can be created.

Nipple tattoo by skin therapist
The tattoos are done by a skin therapist. The pigments used are carefully selected to imitate the natural colours of the skin and nipple as accurately as possible. By using 3D effects in the tattoo, a lifelike reconstruction of the nipple can be made.
It is important to know that nipple tattoos usually need to be touched up after a few years. Due to the colors used and the type of skin, the color can fade over the years.
Nipple tattoo options
A nipple tattoo is possible at:
- Complete absence of nipple without surgical nipple reconstruction
- Complete absence of nipple with surgical nipple reconstruction
- Nipple necrosis
- Scar tissue in or around the areola

Our skin therapist will work with you to determine the desired nipple appearance. To give you an idea of the possible results, we'll show you some photos of patients who have had their nipple tattooed by us.
How much does a nipple tattoo cost?
A first nipple tattoo after reconstruction is always covered by your health insurer. For other cases, such as an existing but faded nipple tattoo, your practitioner must submit a request to your health insurer. Your health insurer will inform you by letter or email whether the treatment will be covered.
