The first consultation
After losing a lot of weight, there is often skin left over. Sports, massage or fat extraction usually do not help. Too much skin can be annoying when moving and can cause blemishes. It can also cause psychological complaints. We are happy to help you get rid of this, so that you can look radiant in the mirror again. During the first consultation, the plastic surgeon will discuss your wishes and complaints with you. He or she will assess whether the lower body lift is the right operation to achieve the desired result. Our doctors always give you honest and transparent advice. They will also tell you everything about the procedure: from preparation to aftercare. No question remains unanswered!
After the consultation, you will receive your personal quote from the consultant. This is tailor-made for you, because the cost of this operation depends on various factors. The complexity and duration of the operation affect the price.
The surgery
If you decide to undergo the operation, the date of the operation will be scheduled in consultation with you. You will receive instructions from us to optimally prepare yourself for the operation. The procedure will take place under general anesthesia and will take approximately 4-5 hours. After the operation, you will stay with us for 1 night.
Before the operation, the plastic surgeon will visit you to mark the area to be operated on. During the procedure, excess skin and fatty tissue will be cut away. Sometimes liposuction will also be performed. You will have a scar around your abdomen and back. The wounds will be closed with dissolvable stitches. After the operation, a tight band will be placed around your abdomen. Your plastic surgeon will advise you further on wearing this band.
After the surgery
Your attending physician will provide you with as much information as possible about the recovery period. You can also always contact our consultants for questions and advice. Below we will briefly tell you what you can expect after the operation.
• The first day there will be a tight band around your abdomen. The day after the operation you may wear pressure clothing. We advise you to wear pressure clothing day and night for 6 weeks. This pressure clothing helps to reduce swelling and ensures that there is less tension on the surgical wound. You must purchase the pressure clothing yourself.
• The first night your bed will be in a slight wobble position. This relieves the tension on the wound.
• You may not take a bath, swim or go to the sauna for up to two weeks after the operation. Avoiding these heat sources promotes wound healing.
• After 2 weeks you have an appointment at the outpatient clinic. You will come to us for a check-up.
• If you are in pain, you may take 2 x 500mg paracetamol tablets a maximum of 4 times a day. If this is not enough, you may contact our outpatient clinic. You will often be given something extra to take home.
• During the first few days after the operation, you should try to get out of bed regularly and walk around. Keeping moving will prevent serious swelling.
• You may not lift heavy objects or do heavy physical labor for the first 6 weeks. If everything has healed quietly, you may resume doing everything after 6 weeks and you may also start exercising again.
The result of a lower body lift
During the consultation, your plastic surgeon will try to give you an idea of the result you can expect based on your initial situation. However, remember that every body is different, so the result will also vary per patient. The result of a lower body lift depends on various factors, such as:

Following the rules of life after the operation
Also fluctuations in your weight (gain or lose weight) after the operation will affect the final result. We therefore advise you to undergo this operation only when you have reached your target weight and have been at a stable weight for some time. This way you can be sure that you can enjoy the result for a long time.
Risks and Complications
With an operation like this, there is always a chance of complications. The quality of the skin, the duration and size of the operation and any existing conditions affect this. Possible risks and complications are:

Is this surgery reimbursed?
In general, a cosmetic procedure like this is not reimbursed by your health insurer. However, there are situations in which you may be eligible for reimbursement. You must meet various requirements for this. The College of Health Insurance sets these requirements. At the moment, the basic criteria after a gastric bypass operation are:
BMI less than 35
Weight stable for 12 months
Bariatric surgery at least 18 months ago
Grade 3 on the Pittsburgh scale
If you do not meet these criteria, you will not be eligible for reimbursement. If you do meet these criteria, there is unfortunately no guarantee of reimbursement. Sometimes the health insurer will ask you to send additional information and photos. This allows them to assess the severity of your complaints. They will send you a message about their decision.
