Are you considering liposuction? This page will give you step-by-step instructions on what to expect on the day of the procedure. This will ensure that you arrive at the surgery center well-prepared on the day of the operation.
Preparing for the procedure
Liposuction is usually performed as a day treatment; this means that you can go home the same day. You are not allowed to drive home yourself, so make sure that someone picks you up in advance.
In order to perform the surgery safely, your plastic surgeon will discuss your medical history, any allergies and medication use beforehand. Are you taking blood thinners such as Aspirin, Sintrom or Marcoumar? You will be given instructions on when to stop taking them.
A good physical condition beforehand helps with a speedy recovery. If you smoke, our doctors strongly advise you to stop at least three weeks before the procedure, because smoking slows down the healing process.
Day of the operation
On the day of the procedure, you will report to our surgery center. Before the operation starts, you will first see the plastic surgeon. Do you have any questions or concerns? Then of course you can share them. We think it is important that you go into the operation without any worries. The treatment looks like this:
Step 1: Marking the treatment area
Together with your plastic surgeon, you will have discussed the areas to be treated during the consultation. These areas will now be carefully marked out on your skin. The small incisions for the suction needles will also be indicated.
Step 2: Anesthesia and tumescent fluid
The operation takes place under local, regional or general anesthesia, depending on the treatment plan. The area to be treated is first numbed with injections. Then a special fluid (the tumescent fluid) injected. This fluid:
- narrows the blood vessels (less bleeding),
- enhances the anesthesia,
- loosens the fat.
We let the liquid work for about 20 minutes.
Step 3: Removing the fat
Using a fine suction needle connected to a vacuum pump, the plastic surgeon sucks away the fatty tissue. The doctor feels the skin to assess whether sufficient fat has been removed. The treatment is painless, but you may experience a somewhat pressing sensation.
Step 4: QuantumRF
To actively support the skin in tightening after liposuction, QuantumRF are applied. This is a minimally invasive technique in which radiofrequency energy is delivered under the skin. This causes immediate contraction of the connective tissue and stimulates collagen production. A thin instrument is inserted under the skin through small insertion openings. This delivers controlled heat to the underlying tissue. This heat causes the connective tissue to contract immediately and stimulates the skin's natural healing process. This treatment is often performed immediately following liposuction, so that both volume and skin quality are treated in a single session.
Duration of the operation
The duration of liposuction depends on the number of treatment areas and usually varies between 1 to 2.5 hours.
After the surgery
Immediately after the procedure, the treated area is bandaged with plasters and pressure pants (liposuction pants) or elastic bandage. This is essential to:
– to allow the skin to adhere properly;
– to reduce swelling;
– to support recovery.
You wear the compression clothing four to six weeks, day and nightYou may remove the pressure pants briefly to shower (from 24 hours after the operation). NB: we do not provide extra compression pants. You can buy a second one yourself, for example a correction panty in your own size at a lingerie store.
After the operation you may still feel a little weak and the treatment area:
– swollen;
– discolored blue;
– sensitive to moisture and bruising.
The first 24 hours after the procedure, some wound fluid may leak through the insertion holes. This is normal. We recommend that you bring comfortable clothing that can get dirty.
