Lipofilling is a treatment in which the body's own fat is used to add volume or improve contours. The procedure is performed under local or general anesthesia. The appropriate anesthesia depends on the region and size of the treatment area. You will discuss this with your plastic surgeon in advance, so that you know exactly what to expect. Preparing for surgery
Good preparation contributes to a speedy recovery. Make sure you are in good condition before the procedure. During the consultation, you will discuss your medical history, previous operations, allergies (such as to iodine, plasters or anesthetics), and medication use with your plastic surgeon. With this information, we can ensure that the lipofilling is safe.
Are you taking blood thinners such as Aspirin, Marcoumar or Sintrom(mitis)? Then you should – in consultation with your plastic surgeon or thrombosis service – stop taking this medication in time. You may use paracetamol as pain relief. We advise you to take multivitamins before and after the operation to support recovery.
Smoking slows the healing process considerably. If you smoke, stop at least three weeks before surgery.
Please also note the following:
- On the day of surgery, wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing;
- Do not apply body lotion or cream to the skin;
- Make sure someone can pick you up; you are not allowed to go home on your own;
- If possible, arrange for help at home for the first few days after the operation;
- Purchase an ice pack in advance to cool the treated area. A freezer bag with peas or ice in a washcloth works well.
With local anesthesia, you will be given an IV to administer additional pain relief if necessary. In addition, the doctor will administer a single dose of antibiotics to prevent infection.
The surgery
On the day of the operation, you will report to the reception desk of our operating center at the agreed time. Before the operation starts, you will first have the opportunity to ask questions to your plastic surgeon. We believe it is important that you go into the operation without any worries. Are you ready? Then the surgeon will accurately mark out the area to be treated and you will be taken to the operating room. Here, the area to be treated will be covered with a sterile covering. First, the plastic surgeon will inject an anesthetic fluid into the area from which the fat will be sucked away. The fat is then removed using thin tubes and a low suction pressure. This fat is collected in a closed filter system (PureGraft), which removes unwanted substances such as blood, anesthetic fluid and broken fat cells. This leaves only healthy fatty tissue.
This fat is then transferred into small syringes and injected into the desired area using fine cannulas. This is done in multiple layers to achieve the most natural result possible. The procedure takes approximately 1 to 1.5 hoursFinally, small plasters are applied to the wounds and remain in place for at least three days.
In the first lipofilling treatment, approximately 50 to 70% of the injected volume is ultimately retained. The body removes excess fluid and some of the fat cells in the first few weeks. The final result is visible after approximately three months. Any stored fat can be frozen and injected during a second session.
You may go home the same day after the operation.
After the surgery
Immediately after the procedure, the donor and treatment area may be slightly swollen or blue. This is normal and will disappear within one to two weeks. Cooling helps to reduce swelling and any after pain.
The pain is usually described as a sore or muscle pain and can usually be suppressed with paracetamol. You may shower immediately after the procedure, but avoid intensive exercise for the first few weeks. Heavy lifting and sports are discouraged for four to six weeks.
You can resume light activities fairly quickly after the operation, depending on how you feel and the extent of the treatment. During the follow-up checks, you will discuss the recovery with the doctor and assess the final result together. During the consultation, the plastic surgeon will tell you more about the recovery period, so that you can prepare yourself optimally for it.
Risks
As with any operation, there are also risks of complications with lipofilling. Possible complications include infection, post-operative bleeding, bruising, swelling or delayed wound healing. In addition, excessive scarring, temporary changes in sensation (such as hypersensitivity or insensitivity) or asymmetry may occur. In some cases, small lumps may develop because fat is visible or palpable under the skin. These often disappear on their own, but can be corrected later if necessary. Your attending physician will discuss these risks with you in detail beforehand.
