Gynecomastia surgery is a safe and effective treatment to correct excess mammary gland or fatty tissue in men. For an optimal result, recovery is just as important as the procedure itself. Our plastic surgeons will therefore provide you with extensive advice about recovery. On this page, you can read briefly what to expect after surgery, how to promote recovery, and when you can resume your daily activities.
The first week: rest and support
After the operation, the treatment area is almost always swollen. This is due to bruising and wound fluid, and is a normal reaction of the body. During this period, rest is essential to promote the healing process, the body uses a lot of energy for healing without noticing. The first week looks like this:
– You wear an elastic compression corset over the bandage immediately after the procedure;
– This corset reduces swelling and bruising and ensures that the skin adheres well to the underlying tissues.
– Our advice is to take it really easy for the first 7 days. Avoid movements that tighten or stretch your chest muscles.
Swelling in the first few days is normal. This is not a cause for concern. If you have any doubts, you can always contact us.
Week 2: light activities
Between days 7 and 14, if you feel well, you can start with light activities. Do you have a sedentary job? Then you can go back to work. In addition, you can resume light household chores. You should avoid sports, lifting and other physical exertion for the time being. You will continue to wear the elastic corset during the day and at night, unless your plastic surgeon advises otherwise.
Check-up appointment after two weeks
Approximately 2 weeks after the operation, you will come to us for a check-up. During this appointment, the doctor will look at the result, check the wound area and answer any questions. Are you unsure about something, for example whether you can go back to work? Then this is a good time to ask your doctor.
Until week 3: continue wearing the corset
For a good result, it is important that you continue to wear the compression corset for as long as your doctor advises, usually up to 3 weeks after the procedure. Wearing the corset reduces the risk of fluid retention, helps to form a tight contour and supports scar healing.
After 6 weeks: complete recovery
Usually after 6 weeks the body has recovered sufficiently to resume all activities.
- Physically demanding work is now permitted;
- You may resume sports activities, including strength training;
- Swelling and tenderness are visibly reduced;
- The end result will gradually become visible in the weeks and months that follow.
Tips for a speedy recovery
Together we strive for an optimal result. To achieve this, our plastic surgeons have a few more tips for you.
- Avoid strenuous exercise and lifting for the first 6 weeks, and do not stretch your arms above your headThis allows the treatment area to recover and prevents unnecessary pressure;
- Avoid smoking and alcoholThis significantly slows down wound healing and your plastic surgeon will tell you more about this during your consultation.
- Wear the corset as prescribed by your doctorWe know better than anyone that this corset is not always comfortable, but it really contributes to an optimal result.
- In case of pain, use only paracetamol. Do you notice that this does not provide sufficient relief? Please contact us.
Rest is essential for good healing in the first period. Make sure you keep moving. After the first week you can cycle again, and before that you can go for a gentle walk.
