In men, breast formation can occur due to an excess of glandular tissue, fatty tissue or a combination of these. Depending on the cause and the extent of breast formation, the plastic surgeon will choose the right surgical technique. During the consultation, we will discuss with you which treatment is most suitable for your situation. On this page, we will tell you what you can expect from the operation.
How does gynecomastia surgery proceed?
The operation takes approximately one and a half hours and usually takes place under general anesthesia. Only in the case of liposuction without additional intervention, local anesthesia with sedation may be sufficient.
The procedure is performed through small incisions in inconspicuous places, such as under the nipple or in skin folds. You can go home the same day.
Preparing for surgery
For a safe operation, good preparation is important. The plastic surgeon will therefore ask about your medication use, allergies and any previous operations. The plastic surgeon will discuss with you in advance whether you need to temporarily stop taking certain medications, such as blood thinners (for example Sintrom, Marcoumar or Ascal). You do not have to decide this yourself, this is always done in consultation with your attending physician.
If you smoke, we advise you to stop at least three weeks before surgery. Smoking slows down wound healing and increases the risk of complications.
On the day of surgery, make sure you wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing. You will not be allowed to drive home after surgery, so arrange transportation and assistance in advance.
Day of the operation
On the day of the procedure, you report to our reception desk at the agreed time. A nurse will accompany you to your room and prepare you for the operation. The plastic surgeon will then mark the breast area and discuss any final questions or uncertainties with you. We believe it is important that you go into the operation with peace of mind, so we will take plenty of time to answer your questions.
Before the operation different treatment techniques possible. Depending on the treatment technique, the operation takes place under local anesthesia or general anesthesiaThe different treatment techniques are:
1. Removal of glandular tissue
If the breast formation is mainly caused by glandular tissue, the plastic surgeon removes this through a small incision at the bottom of the areola. A small amount of glandular tissue is deliberately left behind so that the nipple does not retract after the operation. If necessary, the surgeon also removes excess skin.
- Duration: ± 1.5 hours
- Anesthesia: General anesthesia
- Stitches: Soluble
- Scars: Around the bottom of the areola (usually barely visible)
2. Removal of fatty tissue (liposuction)
When breast formation is caused by fatty tissue, this is done via liposuction removed. In this procedure, the plastic surgeon makes a small incision in an inconspicuous place. First, a fluid is injected to loosen the fat, then the fatty tissue is sucked away with a thin, hollow tube.
- Duration: ± 1.5 hours
- Anesthesia: Local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia
- Stitches: Usually not necessary; the small wounds are taped shut
- Scars: Small and subtle, often barely visible
3. Combination of glandular and fatty tissue removal
Sometimes a combination of both techniques is necessary. This is determined during the consultation and possibly after additional research (such as an ultrasound).
The plastic surgeon will tell you which treatment technique is best suited to your situation during the first consultation.
Immediately after the operation
After the procedure, you will wake up in the recovery room. Your chest will be bandaged. Under the bandage, there are usually two drains that drain blood and wound fluid. In most cases, these can be removed the next day. You will be given a separate appointment for this. This will be followed by a check-up at the outpatient clinic.
You will be fitted with an elastic pressure vest (corset) immediately after the procedure. You wear this:
- During the first 3 weeks: day and night
- During the following 3 weeks: during the day
This pressure vest helps to reduce swelling and bruising and ensures that the skin adheres properly to the underlying tissue.
You are not allowed to drive home independently on the day of the operation, so make sure you have someone to accompany you.
Afterpain and recovery
Most patients experience a sore or tense feeling in the chest area for the first few days, similar to muscle pain. This after pain can be treated well with paracetamol. We will provide you with more information about recovery, so that you know what to expect after the operation.
Risks of this operation
A gynecomastia treatment is a safe procedure when performed by an experienced plastic surgeon. However, as with any operation, there are risks. Think of postoperative bleeding, infections or delayed wound healing. Fortunately, these complications are rare. During the consultation, the doctor will discuss these risks with you.
