Forehead lift: the operation

A forehead lift is a plastic surgery procedure that improves the position of the eyebrows and tightens the skin of the forehead. This provides a fresher, more rested and youthful appearance. Are you considering this procedure? Then you probably want to know what the operation will look like. We will tell you more about this on this page.

Preparing for surgery

Before you undergo surgery, your plastic surgeon must be aware of any previous surgeries and any allergies. If you are taking medication, your plastic surgeon will tell you which medications you should stop taking before surgery. This is especially true for medications that inhibit blood clotting, such as aspirin, Sintrom and Marcoumar.

If you smoke, you must stop three weeks before the operation. Smoking adversely affects the healing process. These matters will be discussed with you during the consultation, so that you know in time what steps you need to take.

On the day of the operation you should fast. Your skin should be clean, so we advise you not to apply any cream or use any cosmetics on the morning of the operation.

Arrival at our clinic

On the day of the operation, you report to the reception of our operating centre. A nurse will pick you up and accompany you. The plastic surgeon will then mark your face and possibly take a final photo for the medical file. You will then be given anesthesia by the anesthesiologist. Due to the anesthesia, you will not notice anything of the operation itself.

The surgery

How the operation proceeds depends on the type of forehead lift that is being carried out. There are two different techniques that our plastic surgeons apply and the most suitable technique is determined by your facial shape, the position of your hairline and the amount of excess skin. We distinguish:

– The endoscopic forehead lift;
– The traditional forehead lift.

During the day the consultation it is assessed which method best suits your wishes and facial shape. Below we will tell you how both types of operations proceed.

Endoscopic forehead lift

The endoscopic forehead lift involves lifting the forehead as a whole, without removing any skin. This technique is particularly suitable for people with a shorter forehead or in the case of early hair loss, because the scars are minimal and well hidden.

During the operation, the plastic surgeon makes small cuts in the hairy scalp the periosteum that lies beneath the muscles of the forehead is released. This is done with the help of a endoscope (a thin tube with a camera and light source) with which the surgical area is greatly enlarged on a screen. This allows for very precise work, while sparing important nerves.

The plastic surgeon then pulls up the periosteum, causing the eyebrows to move upwards automatically. The whole thing is secured with dissolvable sutures, anchored to small screws or via a hole in the bone. The scars are small (about one centimeter) and are located in the hairline: two at the temples, two on the sides, and one in the middle of the forehead. These scars are barely or not visible after a while.

This operation takes place under general anesthesia and lasts 1 to 2 hoursAfter the operation, you may go home the same day under supervision.

Traditional forehead lift

With the traditional forehead lift, excess skin is removed. This method is suitable for people with a longer forehead, where it is desirable to visually shorten the forehead.

The plastic surgeon makes a longer incision in the hairy scalp. Through this opening, the skin of the forehead is detached from the underlying layer and pulled up tightly. Excess skin is removed and the wound is sutured. This immediately lifts the eyebrows and smooths the forehead.

The scar runs over the hairy part of the head, but is usually not visible through the hair. This technique is less suitable for people with (beginning) baldness, because the scar can then become visible.

This operation also takes place under general anesthesia and lasts 1 to 2 hoursAfter the operation you may go home with an escort, you do not have to stay overnight with us.

After the surgery

Immediately after the procedure, the face may be swollen and bruised. This is normal. In some cases, drains are placed to drain excess blood and wound fluid. These will be removed before you go home.

You will be given a head bandage and instructions for cooling the forehead with a cool pack. This will help with swelling and pain. We also recommend using paracetamol as pain relief. You will also be given a prescription for additional medication if necessary.

Doctors

During the no-obligation consultation, you will discuss your wishes and the treatment with the plastic surgeon. We understand that a procedure can be a significant step, so the surgeon is happy to take the time to tell you all about it. Our specialized surgeons are:

Dr. Hay Winters

After completing his medical studies at the universities of Ghent and Nijmegen, Dr. Winters trained in general surgery at the Diaconessen Hospital in Eindhoven and the Sint Lucas Hospital in Amsterdam. Subsequently, he specialized in plastic surgery, and after his registration in 1994, Hay Winters focused further on complex reconstructive procedures: primarily of the face and breasts (for example, after the removal of a tumor), but also of the trunk, arms, or legs (likewise after the removal of malignant lesions or following serious accidents). From his passion for reconstructive surgery arose an interest in aesthetic surgery, as he realized that the wish of a patient with a severe disfigurement is essentially the same as the wish of a 'cosmetic' patient: both want an appearance in which they can feel comfortable. His expertise in reconstructive surgery proves to be a great advantage in the practice of aesthetic surgery, particularly when it concerns the breasts or the face. Treatments You can consult Dr. Hay Winters for various types of plastic surgical procedures: Facelift; Armlift; Leglift; Buttocklift; Eyelid correction: upper and lower eyelid correction; Breast surgery: prosthesis exchange, explantation, breast augmentation, lift, and reduction; Abdominal wall correction; Gynecomastia; Hand surgery; Ear and earlobe correction; Labia correction; Lipofilling and liposuction; Scar correction; Skin excision. Plastic surgeon since 1994. Since 1994, Hay Winters has been affiliated with the VU Medical Center as a plastic surgeon, and in 2003, he joined the Department of Plastic Surgery at the Aesthetic Center Amsterdam. More about Dr. Hay Winters. Hay Winters conducts scientific research and publishes articles in international scientific journals. In 2007, he obtained his PhD on the transplantation of vascularized bone from the pelvis and leg for the reconstruction of severe bone defects (lower and upper jaw, spine, arms, and legs). Due to his academic background, he is regularly invited to give lectures both domestically and abroad. As a lecturer, he is involved in continuing education courses for plastic surgeons, as well as for general surgeons, ENT specialists, maxillofacial surgeons, orthopedic surgeons, and rehabilitation physicians. Furthermore, colleagues from home and abroad regularly invite him as a guest surgeon. After participating in the TV program 'De Grootmeesters' in 2005 at the request of the Dutch Society for Plastic Surgery, Hay Winters was voted the best reconstructive surgeon in the Netherlands by both the professional jury and the public. Memberships: Dutch Society for Plastic Surgery (NVPC), the Quality Committee of the NVPC, Dutch Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (NVEPC), European Association for Gender Surgeons (EURAPS), the Quality Council of the Federation of Dutch Specialists, Dutch Society for Surgery, Dutch Working Group on Head and Neck Tumors (NWHHT), European Plastic Surgery Workshop.
