Breast reduction surgery can provide significant relief from physical discomfort and contribute to better body balance. At the same time, many women wonder what to expect regarding scarring. This is an understandable question. In this article, we explain where scars form on the breast, how they develop after the operation, and what you can do yourself to ensure the recovery is as optimal as possible.
Where do scars form after a breast reduction?
During a breast reduction, the plastic surgeon removes excess breast tissue and skin. In addition, the nipple is usually repositioned. To do this carefully, incisions (small cuts) are made. The scars are typically located:
around the areola;,
vertically from the nipple to the breast crease;,
in the breast crease itself.
There are various techniques for breast reduction, and the scarring differs with each technique. The technique used depends on the size of the breasts and the desired result. The plastic surgeon always chooses a method in which the incisions, and therefore the scars, are placed as favorably as possible. The surgeon will explain this to you in detail during the consultation.
The size of the scars and healing
The length and shape of the scars vary from person to person and depending on the technique. Initially, the scars may be red, inflamed, and clearly visible. This is a normal part of the healing process. In the months that follow, they gradually become lighter, more supple, and take on the color of the skin.
The final healing process of scars takes an average of a year. During this period, the structure and color of the scar tissue change, and the scars generally become less noticeable.
Are the scars visible?
Although a breast reduction results in more scarring than, for example, a breast augmentation, these are usually barely noticeable in daily life. The scars are largely situated in natural skin folds and are covered by the shape of the breast itself.
In lingerie, swimwear, and clothing, the scars are usually not visible. However, when you are naked, the scars are visible. As time passes, the scars fade further and blend increasingly well with the surrounding skin. However, the scar will never disappear completely.
In the photo below, we show you scars that are still healing. Here you can see that the scars are still burning and are very visible. This gives a good idea of the initial period, after which the scars will fade.
Care of the scars
Proper scar care contributes to a better final result. As soon as the wounds are fully closed and your plastic surgeon advises it, you can start using a scar cream or gel. This helps keep the scar supple and supports skin recovery.
In addition, it is important to protect scars from sunlight. UV radiation can cause scars to remain red for longer. We therefore recommend covering the scars for the first year or using a sunscreen with a high protection factor.
Your plastic surgeon will guide you during check-ups and provide personal advice on scar care and lifestyle guidelines. Do not start applying scar cream without the go-ahead from your plastic surgeon, as this can actually disrupt wound healing.
When will you contact us?
Scar healing usually proceeds without problems. However, if you notice that a scar remains painful, becomes noticeably thick, or shows signs of inflammation, please always contact the clinic. We would be happy to assess the situation with you and advise you on any necessary next steps.
Frequently asked questions about scars after breast reduction
Do the scars after a breast reduction always remain visible? Yes, although the scars fade and become less noticeable, they will always remain visible. Generally, the scars take on the color of the skin, which is why most women do not find the scars bothersome.
How long does it take for scars to heal? The healing process of scars takes an average of a year. During this period, the scars change in color and structure and become progressively softer and less visible.
Is there anything I can do to promote scar healing? Yes. By taking good care of the scars, avoiding sunlight, and following the advice of your plastic surgeon, you support the best possible recovery. As a result, the scars will heal more beautifully.
Are the scars visible in swimwear or lingerie? No, the plastic surgeon will ensure that the scars are positioned so that they can be covered with lingerie or swimwear.

After completing his medical studies at the universities of Ghent and Nijmegen, Dr. Winters trained in general surgery at the Diaconessen Hospital in Eindhoven and the Sint Lucas Hospital in Amsterdam. Subsequently, he specialized in plastic surgery, and after his registration in 1994, Hay Winters focused further on complex reconstructive procedures: primarily of the face and breasts (for example, after the removal of a tumor), but also of the trunk, arms, or legs (likewise after the removal of malignant lesions or following serious accidents). From his passion for reconstructive surgery arose an interest in aesthetic surgery, as he realized that the wish of a patient with a severe disfigurement is essentially the same as the wish of a 'cosmetic' patient: both want an appearance in which they can feel comfortable. His expertise in reconstructive surgery proves to be a great advantage in the practice of aesthetic surgery, particularly when it concerns the breasts or the face. Treatments You can consult Dr. Hay Winters for various types of plastic surgical procedures: Facelift; Armlift; Leglift; Buttocklift; Eyelid correction: upper and lower eyelid correction; Breast surgery: prosthesis exchange, explantation, breast augmentation, lift, and reduction; Abdominal wall correction; Gynecomastia; Hand surgery; Ear and earlobe correction; Labia correction; Lipofilling and liposuction; Scar correction; Skin excision. Plastic surgeon since 1994. Since 1994, Hay Winters has been affiliated with the VU Medical Center as a plastic surgeon, and in 2003, he joined the Department of Plastic Surgery at the Aesthetic Center Amsterdam. More about Dr. Hay Winters. Hay Winters conducts scientific research and publishes articles in international scientific journals. In 2007, he obtained his PhD on the transplantation of vascularized bone from the pelvis and leg for the reconstruction of severe bone defects (lower and upper jaw, spine, arms, and legs). Due to his academic background, he is regularly invited to give lectures both domestically and abroad. As a lecturer, he is involved in continuing education courses for plastic surgeons, as well as for general surgeons, ENT specialists, maxillofacial surgeons, orthopedic surgeons, and rehabilitation physicians. Furthermore, colleagues from home and abroad regularly invite him as a guest surgeon. After participating in the TV program 'De Grootmeesters' in 2005 at the request of the Dutch Society for Plastic Surgery, Hay Winters was voted the best reconstructive surgeon in the Netherlands by both the professional jury and the public. A burden off Inge's shoulders due to her breast reduction
Sometimes you only realize how much trouble something caused you once the problem has been solved. That is exactly what Inge (47) experienced after her breast reduction at Esthetisch Centrum Jan van Goyen. "Looking back, I should have done it twenty years earlier," says Inge. Inge has been struggling with chronic pain for years, for which she wears a neurostimulator, a small implant in her back that delivers electric shocks to relieve the pain. In addition, her large breasts also caused a lot of physical and mental discomfort. In her search for a solution to these discomforts, it turned out that her neurostimulator was actually the problem. Not suitable everywhere For years, Inge had complaints: bra straps cutting into her skin, pain in her shoulders, and a feeling of discomfort throughout her body. "It was causing me a lot of physical discomfort, but I also really didn't think it looked good. I put off a breast reduction for a long time, constantly doubting: should I do it or not? But eventually I realized: this is not what I want. So then I made the decision." After searching through various hospitals and clinics, Inge ended up at Esthetisch Centrum Jan van Goyen. "Because of the neurostimulator in my back, I couldn't be treated at just any clinic. Through my pain clinic, I heard that at Esthetisch Centrum Jan van Goyen they use a technique that was safe for me. Moreover, I read many positive reviews about the clinic online. That gave me confidence." A warm welcome During her first consultation, Inge immediately felt at ease. "Plastic surgeon Dr. Marlous Arjaans explained everything clearly and took the time for all my questions. I didn't feel like a number, but truly treated as a person." Because her surgery had to proceed differently than usual, Inge was referred to plastic surgeon Dr. Annekatrien van de Kar. "I only met her on the day of the operation. That could have happened sooner, but I had seen her work and knew I was in good hands." Just a little different from the norm On the day of the operation, Inge was lovingly welcomed by the nursing team and met her plastic surgeon. Dr. van de Kar: "Because of Inge's neurostimulator, I could not operate in the standard way. That involves the use of so-called monopolar diathermy, a surgical technique that could damage Inge's neurostimulator. I therefore had to proceed slightly differently. That went perfectly well, and I am glad that we were able to help Inge in this way." A quick peek "Immediately after the procedure, I was taken to the recovery room. You come out of anesthesia and are wearing a tight top. You can see that there is a difference then, but you can't really say much about it yet." That same evening, a nurse stopped by to see Inge to ask if she wanted to take a look at the result already. "I said yes immediately! My first impression when I looked at my breasts was: wow, this is really a lot smaller – how nice! At that moment, you are still completely covered in adhesive tape, of course, but you still see and feel it right away." Another patient in the room also reacted enthusiastically. "She woke up and shouted: 'Oh, how beautiful!' That was such a special moment." Recovery and aftercare Inge found the aftercare excellent. "Everything was explained well, and I received a very nice card with lifestyle guidelines and medication instructions for the coming weeks. When I had a question a few weeks later about a spot that had opened up, I could send a photo immediately. Within half an hour, I received a call back with the doctor's advice. That felt very reassuring." Although six weeks is recommended for recovery, Inge was already back at work for half days after three weeks. "I have chronic pain and sometimes I don't know what normal pain is anymore. But I felt good and thought: why not? Sitting still is not for me." Liberated Now, a few months later, Inge feels liberated. "I wear normal bras again without digging straps. 800 to 900 grams were removed, and you notice it in everything. Clothes fit better, my shoulders feel lighter, and exercising is more comfortable. For me, this procedure was such a relief. I should have done it twenty years earlier." A natural alternative: Claire opted for a breast lift
After years of health problems caused by her breast implants, Claire (43) decided it was time for a change. She had her implants removed and opted for a breast lift at Esthetisch Centrum Jan van Goyen. For years, Claire suffered from vague symptoms such as extreme fatigue, difficulty finding the right words, forgetfulness, heart palpitations, and joint pain. Initially, she did not consider her breast implants as a possible cause. “I got those implants when I was 28, after my first pregnancy,” says Claire. “I wanted to make my breasts fuller because I felt they looked a bit empty at the top.” The symptoms started insidiously, about five years after the implants were placed. “I had never made the connection with my breast prostheses until the symptoms got worse and worse,” she explains. Claire decided to seek help and ended up with plastic surgeon Joyce Florisson. She took her complaints seriously and referred her to an internist at Medisch Centrum Jan van Goyen. Examinations Extensive examinations were performed at the internist's. “They took a blood sample, and it soon became clear that my symptoms were related to an inflammatory reaction in my body, likely caused by my breast implants,” Claire explains. Rheumatoid arthritis was even detected in my blood. The plastic surgeon and internist worked closely together to draw up a treatment plan. After discussing the options, Claire opted for explantation—the removal of the implants—combined with a breast lift. “I didn’t want to have something artificial placed in my body again. The breast lift felt like a natural and healthy choice.” The surgery A few weeks later, the time had come; Claire underwent the surgery at Esthetisch Centrum Jan van Goyen. “I was incredibly nervous,” she admits. “I’m not brave when it comes to medical procedures, but the team put me completely at ease.” The surgery went smoothly, and Claire decided to go home that same evening to recover in her own familiar surroundings. Overall, the recovery went well. “The first two weeks were tough, especially sleeping. You see, you have to sleep upright. But after four weeks, I already felt much better.” A minor complication – a small wound that healed slowly – meant Claire had to be extra careful for a little while longer. “I have learned to really listen to my body and rest when necessary.” Difference After the surgery, Claire noticed a difference almost immediately. “The fatigue and forgetfulness were much less, my heart palpitations had disappeared, and my skin was glowing again,” she says enthusiastically. Her eye issues, such as dryness and redness, also decreased drastically. “I hadn’t expected to feel so much better.” Choosing a breast lift proved to be a good decision. “The result is beautiful,” Claire says proudly. “I still have a nice cup size, and everything feels much more natural. I am incredibly happy with how it looks.” Advice “Take your concerns seriously and seek the right care. Don’t let yourself be brushed off and choose a clinic that really listens to you. And be critical about what you have placed in your body. For me, this was the best choice, and I am incredibly grateful that I took that step.” Are you considering a breast lift?
