The treatment process for breast reduction consists of three phases: the consultation, the operation and the aftercare. On this page we will tell you what you can expect from the operation itself. Have you decided to undergo the procedure? Then you will of course receive extensive and personal information from us, so that you know exactly what to expect.
Before the operation
During the consultation, the plastic surgeon will discuss your wishes, your health situation and your medical history. You will be asked questions about previous operations, medication use, allergies, smoking and alcohol use. Based on this information, the surgeon will determine whether the operation can be performed safely and which technique suits you best.
You will also receive advice on things to consider in the run-up to the operation, such as quitting smoking and being sober on the day of the procedure. The operation will be scheduled in consultation with you and will take place in our brand new operating centre.
How does a breast reduction procedure work?
On the day of the procedure, you report to our reception desk at the agreed time. A nurse will accompany you to your room and prepare you for the operation. The plastic surgeon will then mark your breasts and discuss any final questions or uncertainties with you. We believe it is important that you go into the operation with peace of mind, so we will take plenty of time to answer your questions.
A breast reduction is performed under general anesthesia. During the operation, the plastic surgeon removes some of the breast tissue and the associated skin. A smaller, firmer breast model is then formed. The nipple is moved upwards for a natural and balanced result. A breast reduction therefore always has a lifting effect.
There are various surgical techniques possible. The most commonly used technique leaves scars in a posterior shape, in the following places:
– Around the areolas
– Vertically from the nipple to the breast fold
– In the skin fold under the breast
The incisions are closed with fine soluble sutures. Sometimes it is necessary to place a drain. This ensures that blood and wound fluid are drained properly. In most cases, the drain is removed before you go home.
The operation takes on average two to three hours.
After the surgery
After the operation you will wake up in the recovery room. Your breasts will be bandaged or covered with plasters.
Usually, you will stay with us for one night after a breast reduction. In some cases, you may go home the same day, but the plastic surgeon will discuss this with you during the consultation. Please note that you are not allowed to drive yourself.
You will usually be given painkillers immediately after the operation. The pain should be much less after one day. This pain is usually described by patients as muscle pain and can be effectively treated with paracetamol.

Risks of breast reduction
Breast reduction is a safe procedure when performed by an experienced plastic surgeon. However, as with any operation, there are risks. Think of postoperative bleeding, infections or delayed wound healing. Fortunately, these complications are rare. During the consultation, the doctor will discuss these risks with you. You can also find additional information about this on this page.
