The consultation
One of our plastic surgeons will discuss your wishes regarding the size and shape of your breasts. It is important to determine with you whether your wishes for breast reduction can be met. In addition, the plastic surgeon will inform you of the surgical risks and possible complications.
Breast reduction: the operation
The breast reduction is performed under general anesthetic. During the operation, part of the mammary gland tissue and the associated skin are removed. A new, smaller breast model is formed. The nipple is also moved.
There are various surgical techniques for breast reduction. The scars are located in the most common surgical techniques around the two areolas, under the breast in the skin fold and between the nipple and the fold under the breast, in a vertical direction.
The wounds are closed with very fine suture material and, depending on the location of the suture, dissolve on their own. It may be necessary that a drain is left behind, this drain ensures that any blood and fluid is drained. In consultation with the surgeon you will stay one night at the Jan van Goyen. This is usually the case.
After the surgery
You will have to take it easy on the first day after the breast reduction, but after 2 days you can do light household and administrative work. Heavy work, such as vacuuming and lifting, should be avoided for the first two weeks. You can exercise again after 6 weeks. It goes without saying that you should handle the surgical area with care during the first few weeks.
The scars may look a bit fiery at first. Over the course of a year, that fervor disappears, they take on the color of your skin and become less visible. Ultraviolet rays are not good for the scars, so they can remain red for an unnecessarily long time. It is therefore best to keep the scars covered in the first months, this can be done with a sunblock. After the operation, you will wear a sports bra for 6 weeks, of which 3 to 4 weeks are day and night. Then only during the day.
Aftercare and recovery after a breast reduction
After surgery, the breasts will be smaller and firmer, but scars will always remain. The plastic surgeon strives for absolute symmetry in double-sided operations, but this cannot be guaranteed. The shape and sensitivity of the nipples may also be different than you expected.
You should realize that with a breast reduction or firming operation no correction is made of the excess tissue under the armpits, possibly extending to the back. Sagging that has started will continue after this shape-enhancing operation and may adversely affect the initial result in the long run.
Due to general weight gain, pregnancy or the use of the pill, the breasts can become heavier again. The plastic surgeon cannot guarantee a specific bra cup size after surgery.
