What is an explant?
During an explantation, the breast implants are removed by a plastic surgeon. A small incision is made in the skin. Through this incision, the surgeon can remove the breast implants and any capsule formation. There are several options available.
1. Prosthesis change
This treatment method involves removing your current prostheses and any capsule formation, and replacing them with new ones. You will discuss the shape, size, and placement technique with your doctor during your consultation. Learn more about the denture change do you find here.
2. Explantation
Do you want to remove your prostheses and are you happy with the natural shape of your breasts? Then a explantation.
3. Explantation in combination with breast lift
An explantation is often combined with a breast liftThis treatment is chosen when excess skin is left behind after implant removal. A breast lift lifts the breast by removing excess skin and elevating the nipple. The lift gives the breasts a firmer and more youthful appearance.
4. Explantation in combination with lipofilling
Would you like to restore (part of) the lost volume? Sometimes this is possible with your own body fat. This is called lipofilling This procedure involves liposuction of fat from elsewhere in the body. This fat is then collected, purified, and injected into the breasts. You can read more about this treatment. here.
The treatment process

3. aftercare
It is important that you receive the right treatment and therefore the plastic surgeon will determine during the first consultation whether your wishes for an eyelid correction can be met.
1. Consult
During the consultation, the surgeon will ask about your wishes. Any complaints will be discussed in detail. This gives the plastic surgeon a clear picture of the initial situation and the desired result. Among other things, they will examine whether there is capsule formation, the shape of the breasts, and the elasticity of the skin.
2. Operation
First, the treatment area is marked. Once you are ready, you will be put under general anesthesia. The surgery typically takes one to one and a half hours, after which any additional treatments, such as lipofilling or a breast lift, are performed. Any existing capsule formation is removed during the procedure.
3. Aftercare
After the surgery, you can usually go home the same day, provided someone picks you up. For the first few weeks, you should take it easy and avoid heavy lifting or exercising. You can take paracetamol for pain relief. We will provide you with detailed aftercare instructions to ensure a speedy recovery.

Before and after breast implant removal
We'll show you some before-and-after photos of women who had their breast implants removed by us without opting for additional treatments. This results in the breast shape remaining the same, but the volume naturally decreasing.
DisclaimerEvery patient is unique. Keep in mind that results vary from person to person, depending on factors such as the amount of fatty tissue, the size of the implants, and the elasticity of the skin.
Explantation in combination with additional treatments
These photos show women who, in addition to explantation, opted for additional treatments such as a breast lift or lipofilling. By choosing an additional treatment, the breasts don't sag and volume can be (partially) restored.

Frequently Asked Questions
If you have no complaints, you can usually assume that your implants are fine. The national guideline therefore does not recommend having your breast implants checked periodically, unless you experience complaints. These complaints may include pain or discomfort in your breasts, a changing shape of your breasts, changes in the skin or palpable hard spots or lumps.
If you experience these complaints, our advice is to have this further examined by a medical specialist. Make an appointment with your GP for a referral or contact us. Even if the breast implants have not been placed by us, we can help you further. Thanks to the close collaboration between the internists in our Medical Center and the plastic surgeons in our Aesthetic Center, we can not only help you with the examination, but also remove the breast implants for you if necessary. We take your complaints very seriously and are happy to help you.
Various factors play a role in this, such as the original size of your breasts, the type of implant, the duration of the implant and the elasticity of the skin. Removing breast implants therefore leads to different results for every woman. Please do not opt for additional treatment (such as lipofilling or new implants), then you can generally expect the following:
- The volume of your breasts has been reduced because the implant provided this volume.
- The skin may be looser than before, as the skin may have been stretched by the implant.
Many patients express concerns about the results after explantation. They are sometimes afraid of being left with a lot of excess skin and sagging breasts. Fortunately, in most cases, this is not a problem. During the consultation, the doctor will explain what to expect and inform you about possible options for achieving a beautiful and natural result.
With an explantation, you can choose to have your breasts filled with your own body fat. This treatment is called lipofilling. Liposuction is used to remove fat from elsewhere in the body, such as the abdomen, flanks, or hips. This fat is then collected, purified, and injected into the breasts. For this treatment method, it's important that there is sufficient fat in the body to achieve a voluminous result.
An explantation can be reimbursed if it is medically necessary. To determine this, the health risks and dangers to the patient are considered. This may indicate that the explantation is medically necessary and is therefore covered by your health insurer. If you combine the explantation with another treatment, such as lipofilling or a breast lift, you will pay for this part of the surgery yourself, but you can still receive reimbursement for the explantation. Do you suspect a medical necessity in your case? Don't hesitate to contact us. We are happy to help you develop a treatment plan.
Every surgical procedure carries risks and complications. By providing appropriate information and precautions, we aim to minimize the risk of complications. By carefully following our preoperative instructions, you minimize the risk of complications. Some possible complications of an explantation may include:
- Change in sensation in your breasts;
- Allergic reactions to the anesthetic or suture material;
- Swelling or bleeding;
- Infections.
If unexpected problems arise, for example, if inflammation develops, if pain increases, if bleeding occurs, or if wound healing is impaired, please always contact us. Because we are a subsidiary of OLVG, We are available 24/7 in case of complications.
