At Aesthetic Center Jan van Goyen Breast enlargement is one of the most commonly performed procedures. Our plastic surgeons see hundreds of women every year for breast enlargement, so you are certainly not alone! We understand better than anyone that an intervention like this raises countless questions. We are happy to help you with your questions.
We think it is very important that our patients are well informed. During each consultation, ample time is taken to tell you everything about the procedure. Because our plastic surgeons speak to women undergoing breast enlargement every day, they regularly receive the same questions. In this article you will find the answers to the 10 most frequently asked questions.
1. How much does a breast enlargement cost?
Breast augmentation is available with us starting from €5,300. This includes a DBIR registration and an Emdaplast bra. We work with Motiva breast implants and depending on the type of implant you choose (round or ergonomics), the costs may vary. You will receive a personal quote at your first consultation. You can read more about the costs here. here.
2. How long will I stay in the hospital after breast enlargement?
After a breast enlargement you can go home the same day. After the procedure, you will wake up in the recovery room and when you feel well enough, you can go home under supervision. This is usually within a few hours after the operation.
3. How long does recovery take after breast enlargement?
For full recovery you should expect approximately 6 weeks. However, this does not mean that you cannot do anything for 6 weeks. If you have a sedentary job, you can generally return to work after a week. You are not allowed to do physical work or heavy lifting yet, but after 4 to 5 weeks you can lift again and after 6 weeks you can even exercise intensively again.
During the first week it is advisable to have help around you. Household chores, getting in and out of bed, and washing your hair are tasks you may need help with. It is important to listen to your body's signals and carefully follow the plastic surgeon's postoperative instructions. This will promote recovery and minimize the risk of complications.
4. What am I not allowed to do after a breast enlargement?
When having a breast enlargement, it is important to carefully follow the postoperative instructions of the treating physician. While specific instructions may vary by individual, there are some things that almost everyone should avoid after breast augmentation. These are:
1. Intense physical activity. During the first weeks, avoid sports and intensive physical exertion. You can usually resume this after 6 weeks.
2. Heavy lifting. Do you have young children? Please keep in mind that you will not be able to lift them during the first few weeks.
3. Smoking and alcohol. Your plastic surgeon will advise you to stop smoking before the operation and not to resume smoking until at least 6 weeks after the procedure. Smoking can slow down the healing process. In addition, alcohol is also not recommended because it can promote bleeding. For optimal recovery, avoid smoking and alcohol completely.
4. Move your arms up. You can of course move your arms, but make sure that your elbows do not exceed shoulder height.
5. Wearing a regular bra. After the operation you will wear a sports bra (emdaplast bra) that you receive from us. You must wear this for 6 weeks, unless your plastic surgeon gives other instructions.

5. Why am I not allowed to lift heavy after the procedure?
Lifting can put strain on the pectoral muscles and breast tissue. In addition, heavy lifting can prevent blood circulation and cause swelling in the operated area. This can slow the healing process or cause complications. By minimizing lifting, you prevent extra pressure on the chest and promote recovery.
6. How painful is a breast enlargement?
In general, breast enlargement is not very painful. However, pain always varies from patient to patient and therefore it is difficult to give you an indication of the level of pain you can expect. Many patients describe the pain during the first few days as muscle aches. You can take paracetamol to combat this pain.
Is the implant placed behind the pectoral muscle? Then you may experience more after-pain than with a pectoral muscle placement. Fortunately, the pain will subside quickly and you will soon be back to your old self. Almost all our patients indicate afterwards that the pain was not too bad for them and that it was absolutely worth it!
7. How to sleep after breast enlargement?
A general piece of advice is to na a breast augmentation sleep on your back, at a 45 degree angle. This means that you lie with your back slightly elevated, for example by using pillows or a pregnancy pillow under your back and head. This can reduce any swelling in the breast area.
Sleeping (or lying) on your stomach should be absolutely avoided during the first few weeks. This puts unnecessary pressure on the breast implants and does not promote the healing process. Are you a stomach sleeper? Then a pregnancy pillow can offer a solution. By sleeping with this pillow, you have more certainty that you will not accidentally roll onto your stomach during your sleep.
8. How long should I wear a sports bra?
You will wear a sports bra for 6 weeks after the operation, the first 3 to 4 weeks day and night and then only during the day. The sports bra provides comfort and support. You will notice that it feels a bit awkward at first when you take off the sports bra. Some patients therefore decide to wear the sports bra for longer than 6 weeks, simply because it is comfortable while you are still getting used to the breast implants. Although this is not necessary, you are of course completely free to do so.
9. Can I be reimbursed for breast enlargement?
In principle, breast enlargement is not reimbursed by your health insurer. In very exceptional cases, in the case of a medical indication, breast enlargement may be reimbursed. If you suspect that this is the case with you, we advise you to seek advice from your health insurer.
10. How do I know how much CC is suitable for my breasts?
The number of CCs is always determined in consultation with the doctor. The number of CCs of the implant will be determined depending on the shape of your breasts, your physique, the amount of fatty tissue and your wishes. If you are considering breast enlargement, you probably have an idea of the cup size you would like. Your treating doctor will ask about this during the first consultation. Based on this, he or she can advise you on the size of implant that will be needed to achieve this result.
Are you concerned, for example because you are afraid that the number of selected CCs will be too large or too small? Always discuss this with your treating plastic surgeon. He or she can reassure you and ease your concerns. We can tell you that almost all patients are extremely satisfied with the number of CCs they have chosen. Due to the expertise of the doctors, an implant that is too large or too small is almost never chosen.
