Eyelid correction is one of the most frequently performed cosmetic procedures in the Netherlands. Where the scar is located after an eyelid correction
At one upper eyelid correction the plastic surgeon makes a small incision in the natural crease of the upper eyelid. Excess skin and any fatty tissue are removed through this opening.
Because the incision is placed precisely in the eyelid crease, the scar is usually barely noticeable once the wound has fully healed. When the eyes are open, the scar is typically hidden in the natural skin fold.
At one lower eyelid correction the incision is usually located just below the lash line or on the inside of the eyelid. Here too, the incision is placed so that the scar is as minimally visible as possible.
How long does the scar take to heal?
The wound from an eyelid correction usually heals within one to two weeks. However, the maturation of the scar takes longer.
On average, it takes about 6 to 12 months before a scar has fully settled. During this period, the color fades and the scar gradually becomes less visible.

What does a scar after eyelid surgery look like?
Immediately after the operation, the scar may still be red and slightly swollen. This is a normal part of the healing process. In the first few weeks, the skin around the scar may still be sensitive or slightly discolored.
In the months that followed, the scar gradually changed:
Week 1 – 2 The wound is healing and the scar may still be red or slightly swollen.
Weeks 3 – 6 The redness decreases and the scar becomes thinner.
3 – 6 months The scar fades further and becomes less visible.
After about 1 year The scar has healed and is generally a thin, light line that is barely noticeable.
Most patients find that the scar is virtually invisible over time.
Is it normal for a scar to remain thick?
Sometimes, a scar may feel somewhat thicker or harder during the first few months. This is because the body produces new connective tissue to repair the skin. This process is called scar maturation and can take several months.
In most cases, the scar softens and flattens on its own. If a scar remains thickened for a longer period or remains noticeably red, your plastic surgeon can assess whether additional treatment is beneficial. Always contact your plastic surgeon promptly if you suspect that the scar is not healing as it should.
Can an eyelid correction scar remain visible?
A scar after eyelid surgery is usually very subtle. The skin of the eyelids is thin, which generally ensures that the scar heals very nicely. Additionally, the scar is located in the skin fold. In rare cases, a scar may remain visible, for example when there is:
• Delayed wound healing; • Tension on the wound; • Genetic predisposition for thickened scars; • Exposure to sunlight during healing.
To prevent your scar from remaining visible, the plastic surgeon will discuss with you during the consultation what you can do yourself to ensure the scar heals as smoothly as possible.
What if the scar is too high?
Sometimes patients worry that the scar after eyelid surgery will be too high on the eyelid. But don't worry; in most cases, it may appear so during the first few weeks because the eyelid is still swollen. As the swelling subsides, the scar will naturally settle lower in the natural eyelid crease.

Tips: what you can do yourself for a beautiful healing

“I look 10 years younger since my eyelid surgery!”
When her husband kept lifting her eyelids, Miranda Keijzer (52) from Volendam knew: something had to change. You underwent an eyelid correction with plastic surgeon Paula Roossink; how did you experience this? “I found the procedure itself to be very relaxed; the assistant and the plastic surgeon talk you through the entire process. The marking was done with great precision, which felt like it took more time than the procedure itself.” Are there many people in your circle who have undergone an eyelid correction? “Eyelid correction is very common in my family; my mother has even had it done twice. So, a real family trait.” Did you have doubts before the operation? “Before the procedure, I had absolutely no doubts; I actually already knew that I would benefit greatly from it, and afterwards, this proved to be true. Besides the fact that everything looks a lot fresher and younger, it also feels much “lighter.” I no longer feel any pressure on the eyelids, which is very nice!” How do you prepare for an eyelid correction? “Not much preparation is needed for an eyelid correction. If you smoke, you have to stop a week beforehand, and the same applies to consuming alcohol. For me, it was important to mainly look forward to it! I believe that if you go into the procedure in a positive mood, this influences the healing process. Did the recovery go well? “After an eyelid correction, my advice is to mainly get plenty of rest and to pamper yourself (or let yourself be pampered) a little. The more rest you take, the sooner the swelling subsides and the faster you recover.” How do you find the final result? “I am incredibly happy with the result, and now, after more than 6 months, the scar is barely visible!”
Tips after an upper and lower eyelid correction: Marije's experience
No matter how long she slept or how she felt, Marije always had significant bags under her eyes and drooping eyelids. That is why she visited plastic surgeon Dr. Paula Roossink for a consultation. Dr. Roossink advised her to undergo both an upper and lower eyelid correction. She did not have to think about this for long and scheduled the procedure. The surgery took place in February 2023, and in this article, she shares her tips from her perspective as a patient. Please keep in mind that these are not tips from a medical specialist, but that Marije wrote this article herself. Before the surgery “If you are considering having eyelid surgery, it is important to be well prepared. For example, I was well aware that I wouldn't look my best for quite some time after the procedure. With upper eyelid surgery, this is usually about 7 to 10 days, whereas with lower eyelid surgery it can take up to two weeks. So, I made sure not to have any important appointments during that period. I also ensured that I was fit and rested before the surgery. Personally, I enjoy running and walking, and I did that a lot in the weeks leading up to it.” 1. Plan sufficient recovery time “After my surgery, I felt pretty good in itself, but of course my eyes were quite swollen. I took it easy for the first few days and my husband was home to look after the children. I had taken a week off and after that I went back to work. I have an office job and that actually went fine. In my case, it took about two weeks before I looked 'presentable' again. Until then, I wore sunglasses outside to hide the swelling.‘ 2. Avoid exercising in the first few weeks ’After my eyelid surgery, I wanted to start running again quickly, but it is really important to be patient with exercise. Your body needs time to recover, and that certainly applies to strenuous activities. My doctor recommended not exercising at all for the first four to six weeks. This means no intensive workouts, weightlifting, or cardio. Once I started exercising again, I listened carefully to my body. I started with walking and built it up until I was walking faster and faster. I also avoided activities where I had to bend over or where the pressure on my eyes could increase, such as weight training or intensive yoga.” 3. Use cold compresses “One of the best ways to combat swelling is by using cold compresses. For the first few days after the procedure, I placed them on my eyes regularly, always wrapped in a tea towel. This not only helped with the swelling but also relieved the pressure I was experiencing.” 4. Ensure a good sleeping position “Another tip I can give is not to lie flat after the surgery. For the first few days, I slept with multiple pillows so that my head was slightly higher than normal. Because your head is elevated, fluid can drain better, which promotes healing and prevents your eyes from becoming extra swollen. It took some getting used to at first, but it is a simple adjustment that can have a major effect on the recovery process.” 5. Protect your eyes from the sun “Sunlight can irritate the sensitive skin around the eyes and cause scars to darken. Especially in the first few months after the surgery, it is important to protect your skin well. That is why I applied SPF 50 to the scars and always wore sunglasses on sunny days.” Finally: be patient! “It can take a while before you see the final result of the procedure. For me, it took about three months before I could fully see how beautifully the procedure had turned out. In the meantime, I regularly took photos of my eyes. When I looked back at the photos from a week or a few weeks earlier, I saw a clear difference. I am incredibly happy with the result of my procedure at Esthetisch Centrum Jan van Goyen.
