Recovery after an eyelid correction

Are you considering an eyelid correction or is this procedure already planned? Then it is good to delve into the recovery process in a timely manner. In this article you can read about recovery after eyelid correction. This way you are optimally prepared and can expect a speedy recovery.

With a procedure like this, keep in mind that every doctor may give different advice. In this article you can read the advice given by plastic surgeons Aesthetic Center Jan van Goyen to give. Are you unsure whether the same advice applies to you? Always consult your own doctor.

Immediately after the procedure

After the procedure you will not be able to drive yourself home. So make sure there is someone ready to take you home after the operation.

The first 24 hours after the eyelid correction it is advisable to seek help at home. You should rest the first day and it is nice to have someone around you for help.

Possible pain and swelling

After the procedure, the eyelids may be painful, swollen and blue. Any applied plaster strips may be bloody and your vision may be somewhat blurred on the day of the procedure. This is not unusual and nothing to worry about.

Usually you cannot open your eyes properly right away. Do you want to clean your eyes? This can be done by using a cotton swab dipped in water. Do not use other products around the eyes.

Our plastic surgeons' advice is to lie with your head slightly higher during the first few nights to limit swelling. Try to lie on your back as much as possible and not on your side or stomach. A pregnancy pillow or an airplane pillow in your neck can help you sleep in the right position.

Pain medication

You can Paracetamol 500 mg take to relieve the pain. You take 6 to a maximum of 8 tablets per 24 hours. In general, the pain during recovery after eyelid correction is very manageable. Many patients therefore quickly reduce their pain medication.

Cold packing

You can apply a cold pack to the eyes on the day of the procedure and the day after. Place a cloth between the cold pack and the skin to prevent excessive cooling of the skin. Do not cool for more than 10 minutes at a time and no more than 4 times a day. When cooling, it is better not to cool than to cool too much.

The recovery per week

You will notice that recovery after surgery is quick. We explain what you can expect each week.

Week 1 to 2 after eyelid correction

You should take it easy during the first week. You should avoid lifting, pressing and bending. Stay physically rested as much as possible to avoid pressure on your head. This prevents swelling due to fluid accumulation in the eyelids.

Driving is strongly discouraged. Even when you have fully regained your vision, your car insurance may not cover any damage caused by the stitches. For various reasons, it is therefore advisable to leave the car parked for the first week.

Depending on the type of work, you can usually return to work after a week. For physically demanding work it is wise to discuss this with your doctor, but for most professions a week of rest is sufficient.

Light exercise is possible again after a week. During the first week you can walk quietly to still get some exercise. Finally, you can usually wear contact lenses again after 1 week.

Week 2 to 3 after eyelid correction

After the first few weeks you can do all the jobs in the house again and you will notice that there are hardly any restrictions anymore.

After two weeks it is possible to apply make-up again. When cleaning your face, be careful not to rub too hard.

You can resume intensive exercise, such as training in the gym, after three weeks.

In connection with the healing of the scar, it is advisable to avoid the sauna and tanning bed for the first three months after the procedure. In direct sunlight you can protect your eyelids with sunglasses. Because the scar needs time to heal, it is advisable to use an SPF in direct sunlight, even after 3 months after the procedure.

When does the swelling decrease?

During the first week, bruising will occur around your eyes and swelling of the eyelids may occur. When you can expect improvement in this depends on it type of eyelid correction that you are undergoing.

Upper eyelid correction

With a correction of the upper eyelids, the bruising and swelling last for about seven to ten days.

Lower eyelid correction

When the lower eyelids are corrected, the swelling and bruising remain visible for a little longer, usually lasting two to three weeks.

For both types of eyelid corrections, the scars become less visible during the first weeks.

Control during eyelid correction recovery

The first check

The first check takes place after a week. You come to the clinic for this.

Leave any plaster strips in place until your first appointment, as these will fix the stitches. You can shower normally with the plaster strips. It is important to dab gently so that they stay in place.

The stitches are removed during the first check-up appointment. Your eyelids are still recovering, but the stitches are no longer necessary.

Sometimes skin glue is used during the procedure instead of stitches. This glue forms a good covering for the wound. The glue forms a kind of crust, which falls off automatically after 10 to 14 days. Some fluid or blood may leak from the wound. In general, this doesn't do any harm. Your doctor will tell you more about this during the first check-up.

The end result

The final result of the eyelid correction is: after about three months visible. The scars take up to a year to fully heal, but after three months you can already see the results. People who do not know that you have had an eyelid correction will not notice the scar themselves.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many days of rest after an eyelid correction?

You should rest completely for the first 24 hours. Then there is a week of taking it easy, during which you do not work and do not lift, bend or press. This is to prevent swelling of your eyelids as much as possible.

How long does it take to recover from an (upper) eyelid correction?

Within 1 to 2 weeks you will be able to resume your daily activities and work. Even though your eyelids and the scar are still recovering, you will hardly notice any restrictions after the first weeks. After 3 weeks you can even exercise intensively again. Do you have a profession that requires very physically demanding work? Then consult your doctor to determine when you can return to work.

How long are you not allowed to bend over after an eyelid correction?

You are not allowed to bend, lift or strain during the first week. It is also advisable to avoid this as much as possible during the second week. Your eyelids can swell due to fluid retention, which can be caused by pressure on your head. Therefore, do not bend over, rest as much as possible and do not lift heavy things.

How do I recognize inflammation?

After an eyelid correction it sometimes seems as if an inflammation has developed, but fortunately this is usually not the case. Any plaster strips applied are dirty, irritated and there is a burning sensation. Usually some fluid has accumulated and there is some mucus formation. True inflammation manifests itself as follows:

– The whites of the eyes are red;
– Pus has formed in the corners of the eyes;
– Abnormal pain and swelling;
– Limited vision.

Dr. Hay Winters

After completing his medical studies at the universities of Ghent and Nijmegen, Dr. Winters trained in general surgery at the Diaconessen Hospital in Eindhoven and the Sint Lucas Hospital in Amsterdam. Subsequently, he specialized in plastic surgery, and after his registration in 1994, Hay Winters focused further on complex reconstructive procedures: primarily of the face and breasts (for example, after the removal of a tumor), but also of the trunk, arms, or legs (likewise after the removal of malignant lesions or following serious accidents). From his passion for reconstructive surgery arose an interest in aesthetic surgery, as he realized that the wish of a patient with a severe disfigurement is essentially the same as the wish of a 'cosmetic' patient: both want an appearance in which they can feel comfortable. His expertise in reconstructive surgery proves to be a great advantage in the practice of aesthetic surgery, particularly when it concerns the breasts or the face. Treatments You can consult Dr. Hay Winters for various types of plastic surgical procedures: Facelift; Armlift; Leglift; Buttocklift; Eyelid correction: upper and lower eyelid correction; Breast surgery: prosthesis exchange, explantation, breast augmentation, lift, and reduction; Abdominal wall correction; Gynecomastia; Hand surgery; Ear and earlobe correction; Labia correction; Lipofilling and liposuction; Scar correction; Skin excision. Plastic surgeon since 1994. Since 1994, Hay Winters has been affiliated with the VU Medical Center as a plastic surgeon, and in 2003, he joined the Department of Plastic Surgery at the Aesthetic Center Amsterdam. More about Dr. Hay Winters. Hay Winters conducts scientific research and publishes articles in international scientific journals. In 2007, he obtained his PhD on the transplantation of vascularized bone from the pelvis and leg for the reconstruction of severe bone defects (lower and upper jaw, spine, arms, and legs). Due to his academic background, he is regularly invited to give lectures both domestically and abroad. As a lecturer, he is involved in continuing education courses for plastic surgeons, as well as for general surgeons, ENT specialists, maxillofacial surgeons, orthopedic surgeons, and rehabilitation physicians. Furthermore, colleagues from home and abroad regularly invite him as a guest surgeon. After participating in the TV program 'De Grootmeesters' in 2005 at the request of the Dutch Society for Plastic Surgery, Hay Winters was voted the best reconstructive surgeon in the Netherlands by both the professional jury and the public.
