Eyelid correction is one of the most commonly performed procedures in the Netherlands. Also with Aesthetic Center Jan van Goyen this is a popular procedure. This is a relatively minor operation, which is usually performed under local anesthesia. Even though it is a minor procedure, we understand better than anyone that you want to be well informed before you make a choice.
Our plastic surgeons speak to several people every day who are considering having an eyelid correction. It is therefore natural that they are regularly asked similar questions. Because you probably have the same questions, we have listed the 10 most frequently asked questions for you.
1. How much does an eyelid correction cost?
At Esthetisch Centrum Jan van Goyen, upper eyelid correction is available from €1,300. Lower eyelid correction starts from €2,900. Do you experience discomfort from both your upper and lower eyelids? 2. What are the risks of an eyelid correction?
Even though risks and complications after eyelid correction rarely occur, we think it is important that you are aware of them. Numbness of the eyelids, fluid accumulation around the eyes, subsequent bleeding, watery or dry eyes and bruising are examples of these risks. During a consultation, the doctor will discuss all risks and possible complications with you.

3. How long does recovery take after an eyelid correction?
Within 1 to 2 weeks you are usually able to resume your daily activities and work. Your eyelids and scars will still be recovering, but you will hardly notice any restrictions after the first few weeks. After 3 weeks you can even exercise intensively again. It recovery after eyelid correction is therefore relatively short.
4. How many days of rest after an eyelid correction?
To promote recovery, we advise you to take it easy for a few days after the operation and not to go back to work immediately. Your plastic surgeon will advise you on the duration of this, because not every situation is the same. For example, if you have a physically demanding job, you will have to stay home longer than if you have an office job.
5. What are you not allowed to do after an eyelid correction?
Although you can return to your daily activities relatively quickly after the procedure, there are a number of things you should avoid for a week or more. These are:
1. Heavy physical exertion. Avoid intense physical activities and heavy lifting.
2. Rubbing the eyes. During the first week, try to touch the area around the eyes as little as possible. Also, do not use makeup in this area.
3. Direct sunlight. Protect your eyes from direct sunlight by wearing sunglasses with UV protection.
4. Contact lenses. Do you wear contact lenses? Then your plastic surgeon may advise you to wear glasses during the first week.
6. Alcohol and smoking. Both alcohol and smoking can slow down the healing process, so it is best to avoid these substances.
During the consultation, your plastic surgeon will advise you on everything you should avoid for a speedy recovery.
6. Is an eyelid correction painful?
During the procedure, the plastic surgeon uses a local anesthetic, so you will not experience any pain during the operation. Even after the procedure, most patients experience little pain. You may experience some discomfort, mild pain, or tightness around the eyes. The eyelids may also become swollen and blue.
Pain varies from patient to patient because everyone experiences pain differently. Fortunately, eyelid correction is generally not considered a painful procedure. Any discomfort will quickly diminish during the recovery process and you will notice that you will soon be back to your old self. Are you concerned about the possible pain? Then discuss this with the plastic surgeon. He or she can reassure you and advise you.
7. What will I look like after an eyelid correction?
Immediately after eyelid correction, there may be some signs of swelling, bruising and possibly some redness. This is completely normal and part of the natural healing process. These effects diminish when you take time off, but this depends on the type of eyelid correction you have had:
At one upper eyelid correction keep the bruising and swelling approx seven to ten days. At one lower eyelid correction the swelling and bruising remain visible for a little longer, this usually lasts two to three weeks On. You will gradually see the results of the eyelid correction.
For both types of eyelid correction, the scars become less and less visible during the first few weeks. Over time, you may still be able to notice the scars yourself, but those around you will not see them. You can find more information about the scars here. here.

8. How long will the result remain visible?
The result of an eyelid correction remains visible for an average of 10 years. However, the aging process continues naturally and the elasticity of the skin can decrease over time. Over time, this can lead to subtle changes in the appearance of the eyelids. In addition, factors such as sun exposure and smoking can also influence the result. Do you live healthy? Then you may enjoy the results for longer!
9. Do I need a referral for an eyelid correction?
You do not need a referral to undergo eyelid correction. However, are you considering an eyelid correction because you suffer from reduced vision and/or headaches? It is then advisable to first discuss these complaints with your doctor. If there is a medical need, your GP can refer you. As a result, you may also be entitled to reimbursement from the health insurer.
10. Will I be reimbursed for an eyelid correction?
If there is a medical necessity, for example if you have serious impairment of your vision, an eyelid correction can be reimbursed under certain conditions.

Drs. Josien van der Meer
Dr. JG van der Meer completed her training as a plastic surgeon at Amsterdam UMC – AMC and OLVG. She completed part of her training at the Antoni van Leeuwenhoek Hospital, the Red Cross Hospital/Burn Center in Beverwijk, and the Spaarne Gasthuis in Haarlem. During her training, she completed an ISAPS Fellowship in Germany, where she specialized in aesthetic and reconstructive periorbital and facial surgery. She has also held various administrative positions within the Dutch Society for Plastic Surgery (NVPC) and as chair of the Junior Society for Plastic Surgery (JVPC). In these roles, she focused on the quality of plastic surgery training and represented the interests of residents. She has participated in various medical missions in Morocco, Laos, and Tanzania, among other places. Since 2019, she has been a European Board Certified Plastic Surgeon (EBOPRAS), having passed the required examination.
