Blepharoplasty (Eyelid surgery)

Are you considering an eyelid surgery? You're not alone. Blepharoplasty is a common procedure and one of the areas of expertise of the plastic surgeons at Aesthetic Center Jan van Goyen. An eyelid surgery is a relatively small procedure with a big result: you get your open, fresh look back!

With blepharoplasty we correct the excess skin around the eyes. Sagging skin of the upper eyelids with wrinkles can give a feeling of heaviness and tiredness, limit the field of vision and cause irritation of the skin and eyes. Sometimes heavy and slack upper eyelids can also cause headaches. Like no other, we understand that people would like to have something done about this. With a professional eyelid correction you will have a fresh and rested look again, you will see more and make-up will stay in place better. An eyelid correction is a relatively small procedure with a great result!

Types of eyelid surgeries (blepharoplasty)

An eyelid correction can be performed in different ways. Prior to the treatment, you will be examined as closely as possible during the consultation to map out your situation. Based on this examination, the plastic surgeon makes a proposal for the operation. The most common procedure is an upper eyelid correction. The lower eyelid correction is also often performed. A combination of an upper and lower eyelid correction is possible and can be discussed with your plastic surgeon.

Upper eyelid correction

If you suffer from drooping eyelids and/or a tired look, we perform an upper eyelid correction. The excess skin of the upper eyelid and the excess fatty tissue are skilfully removed by the plastic surgeon. The incision for the upper eyelid correction is made in the arcade arch and as a result the scar is barely visible after a while. We perform an upper eyelid correction under local anaesthetic.

Lower eyelid correction

If you suffer from bags under your eyes or drooping eyelids, we perform a lower eyelid correction. The excess skin of the lower eyelid and the excess fatty tissue are removed by our plastic surgeon. The incision during a lower eyelid correction falls just below the lash line and as a result the scar is barely visible over time. We perform a lower eyelid correction under local anaesthetic.

The consultation

It is important that you receive the right treatment and that is why the plastic surgeon will determine during this first consultation whether the wishes of an eyelid correction can be met. In addition, the eyelid correction treatment is also discussed, you discuss the surgery risks and the recovery period. Photos will also be taken for your medical file and your medical background will be discussed. It is important for the surgeon to know how good your health is and whether you have undergone previous procedures. After the consultation you know exactly where you stand, what the costs are for the operation and how long it takes to recover from the eyelid correction.

Blepharoplasty: The operation

The upper eyelid correction is performed under local anaesthetic. Prior to the procedure, the plastic surgeon carefully marks which part of the skin may be removed. With an upper eyelid correction, the surgeon then makes a small incision in the skin fold of the upper eyelid.

A lower eyelid correction is often performed under general anesthesia. During the lower eyelid correction, the plastic surgeon makes a small incision under the lash line of the lower eyelid.

Both procedures remove the fat and excess skin from the eyelids. The combination of fat removal and tightening of the skin gives optimal results. The plastic surgeon places sutures that we remove during the first check-up appointment.

Aftercare and recovery after eyelid surgery

After the operation you can go home immediately under supervision. You are not allowed to drive yourself, have someone pick you up from the clinic.

The first week after the procedure, bruising will appear around your eyes and swelling of the eyelids may develop. For an upper eyelid correction it applies that it lasts about seven to ten days and with a lower eyelid correction it takes about two to three weeks. Sutures will be removed during the first check-up. The eyelids still have to recover. In the first weeks after surgery, the swelling decreases and the scars become less visible. The final result of the eyelid correction is most visible after about three months and the scars take up to a year to fully recover.

Frequently asked questions about eyelid surgery

Do I need general anesthesia during an eyelid correction?

We usually perform an eyelid correction under local anaesthesia. In some cases, a lower eyelid correction is more difficult to perform, or the surgery involves a combination of various procedures. This may be a reason to do the surgery under general anaesthesia. All this will be discussed during the first consultation.

Can I resume my work quickly after the procedure?

Be sure to take sufficient rest after the surgery for your body to recover, so we advise you not to resume your work immediately. You can pick up your work activities at your own pace after a week. This means that you can go back to work after one week, depending on the type of work you do. You should not carry out any physically heavy work activities during the first four weeks. If you have a job that involves a great deal of physical work, please take into account that it may be up to four to six weeks before you can go back to work.

Can I wear my eye contact lenses after the surgery?

We advise you to wear glasses for the first week after the eyelid correction. The stitches will be removed from your eyelids after one week, and you can wear your eye lenses again when this has been done. Please make sure that you are able to place the eye lenses without having to pull your eyelids as this will inhibit the recovery process.

Had an eyelid correction last week at doctor Paula Roossink. The end result cannot be judged yet, but from what I can already see, the result is beautiful. Super good doctor and very satisfied with the state of affairs at EC Jan van Goyen.
