Treatment of excessive sweating
Usually the cause of excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis) cannot be identified. The solution to the problem, however, is as simple as it is effective; Botulinum Toxin (Botox®, Azzalure®). Injecting this into the skin leads to a decrease in excessive sweat production by approximately 95%. This does not affect sweat production in other parts of the body. Excretion of waste products via perspiration also remains intact.
During the treatment, small superficial injections are given in the area every centimeter. In consultation with the doctor it may be decided to anesthetize the area to be treated beforehand with cream (Emla®). This largely takes away the feeling of the jabs. However, most patients do not experience the injections as painful and undergo the treatment without anesthesia.
The effect of Botox®/Azzalure® will already become noticeable after about 2 days. After two weeks, the production of sweat has been maximally reduced. This is the moment to assess whether the treatment has been completely successful or whether the surgeon needs to perform a corrective treatment when a certain area of the treated area responds insufficiently to the injections.
The duration of the effect of the treatment differs for every individual, but it lasts from 6 to 12 months on average. After this period, the treatment can be repeated without any risks.
An alternative to excessive sweating is the miraDry treatment which we also offer at Aesthetic Center Jan Van Goyen. This treatment is more expensive but does not need to be repeated.
