Romy (30) struggled with epilepsy attacks from a young age and the heavy medication that came with it. This not only affected her health, but also her weight. After losing a lot of weight in recent years, she wanted to have the excess skin on her stomach removed. That is why she underwent a fleur de lis tummy tuck at Aesthetic Center Jan van Goyen.
In 2018, Romy weighed 165 kilos when her neurologist prescribed medication that stopped her from having epileptic seizures. This drastically changed her lifestyle. “I have been seizure-free since March 2018, and that was the moment when a whole new world opened up for me. I could suddenly go outside and do sports without a care in the world,” she says. After years of sitting still due to medication and epileptic seizures, she decided to actively work on her health.
Excess skin
“I went to the gym several times a week and in the first year I lost 50 kilos.” Although Romy was proud of her weight loss, she wanted to lose more kilos and had a gastric bypass. “This made me lose another 40 kilos. Of course I was very happy with the result, but the more weight I lost, the more excess skin around my stomach became. The thought of having this excess removed started to play more and more in my mind,” she says. “After a while I decided to go for it.”
Consultation at Aesthetic Center Jan van Goyen
“Because I work at OLVG, I am familiar with our ‘daughter’ Aesthetic Centre Jan van Goyen and the work of plastic surgeon Dr. van de Kar. After all, she also works at OLVG. During my first consultation with her, she advised me to have a fleur de lis tummy tuck. This is an operation in which the abdominal wall is tightened and excess fat is sucked away by liposuction.”
The procedure
Fortunately, Romy was not nervous about the procedure. “I had undergone operations before, so it was not something I was dreading. I trusted Dr. van de Kar and the Jan van Goyen team and could not wait to see the results.” The operation itself went without a hitch. “It went very efficiently, in the then relatively new operating theatre complex in Het Slotervaart. The nurses were also incredibly friendly.”
Smooth recovery
After the surgery, Romy had hardly any pain. “The first day I felt some discomfort because of the drains, but that was it. I was standing up straight the next day and after three days I even went outside for a short walk with drains. People asked: 'Didn't you just have surgery?' They couldn't believe how quickly I was moving again.” Romy recovered quickly and soon felt well enough to resume her daily activities.

Tips
“I am very happy with the result,” says Romy. “The excess skin that was in my way is now gone. Other people can see it too, I often get compliments about it.” Romy has some tips for others who are hesitating about a similar operation: “If you are hesitating, go to an orientation interview. The pain is temporary, and the result is absolutely worth it. I have had much more painful procedures myself, such as my gastric reduction, but this operation was really doable.” She also emphasizes the importance of good preparation. “I had checked in advance what I needed for my recovery, such as a raised chair and a high toilet seat. Also make sure that you are fit for your operation. All this ensures that you recover more easily.”
