Laura (26) had been thinking about breast reduction surgery since she was sixteen. Her breasts were heavy, caused back pain and did not feel right for her body. Tension
The surgery was performed by plastic surgeon Dr. Annekatrien van de Kar. Despite Laura's positive feeling, the day of the operation remained nerve-wracking. 'I was incredibly nervous. I was afraid that my breasts would become too small or that the result wouldn't be as I hoped. I was also afraid of the pain. Fortunately, the nurses reassured me a lot. There was also a woman lying next to me who had just had surgery. She was completely happy and actually didn't feel any pain. That helped enormously. When I woke up after the operation, I was still a bit groggy at first. Later, Dr. Annekatrien van de Kar showed me the result. I thought immediately: it has turned out really beautifully!'‘
Because Laura had come from far away, she stayed a night in the city center. She found that pleasant. 'You can relax, enjoy good food and drinks, and ask questions. That gave me a feeling of safety.'‘
Recovery after the operation
The recovery also went better than Laura had expected. 'I would actually dare say that I hardly experienced any pain. I found the restrictions particularly annoying. You have to take it easy and sleep on your back for a while. I wasn't used to that at all. After two days, I could already shower independently and do everyday things.'‘
She does, however, advise others to take sufficient time to recover. 'I would take at least two weeks off. After that, I continued working from home for another two weeks. Driving was technically possible, but in hindsight, I realized it was too much.'‘
Laura could always contact Esthetisch Centrum Jan van Goyen with any questions. 'I could just call or send a photo if I was unsure about something. I found that very pleasant.'.
The check-ups went well. There were no complications and the recovery progressed smoothly.’
Best choice ever
A few months after the surgery, Laura is still incredibly happy with the result. Her back pain has decreased by about 80 percent, and she can now run and do strength training again. 'I still have a large cup size, but my breasts aren't so big anymore that they bother me. They don't sag anymore and stand up nicely again. I've actually never experienced anything like that before. I'm already looking forward to the summer. Bikinis, tops, and backless clothing: I can just wear it all!'‘
Looking back, does she feel she should have had the surgery sooner? 'Yes, actually. But I also understand why I found it so nerve-wracking. It was a big step, and you don't know exactly how it will turn out beforehand. In the end, they listened very carefully to what I wanted, and the result turned out exactly as I had hoped.'‘
Her advice to other women who are hesitant? 'Don't be too afraid of the surgery or the pain. For me, it wasn't nearly as bad as I expected. The pain was much less severe than I had anticipated. I am incredibly happy that I took this step; it was the best decision ever.'‘
