Sometimes you only realize how much trouble you had with something when the problem is solved. That is exactly what Inge (47) experienced after her breast reduction at Esthetisch Centrum Jan van Goyen. “In retrospect, I should have done it twenty years earlier,” says Inge.
Inge has been struggling with chronic pain for years, for which she wears a neurostimulator, a small implant in her back that emits electric shocks to relieve the pain. A warm welcome
During her first consultation, Inge immediately felt at ease. “Plastic surgeon Dr. Marlous Arjaans explained everything clearly and took the time to answer all my questions. I didn’t feel like a number, but treated as a person.”
Because her operation had to be different than usual, Inge was referred to a plastic surgeon Dr. Annekatrien van de Kar. “I didn’t meet her until the day of the surgery. It could have been earlier, but I had seen her work and knew I was in good hands.”
Just a little bit different than usual
On the day of the operation, Inge was lovingly cared for by the nursing team and met her plastic surgeon. Dr. van de Kar: “Because of Inge's neurostimulator, I could not operate in the usual way. This involves the use of so-called monopolar diathermy, a surgical technique that could damage Inge's neurostimulator. I therefore had to proceed slightly differently. That went very well and I am glad that we were able to help Inge in this way.”
Just a peek
"Immediately after the procedure I was taken to the recovery room. You come out of the anesthesia and have a tight top on. Then you can see that there is a difference, but you can't really say much about it yet."
That same evening, a nurse came to Inge to ask if she wanted to see the result. “I immediately said yes! My first impression when I looked at my breasts was: wow, these are really a lot smaller – how nice! At that moment, you are still completely covered in adhesives, of course, but you can see and feel it straight away.” Another patient in the room also responded enthusiastically. “She woke up and shouted: 'Oh, how beautiful!' That was such a special moment.”
Recovery and aftercare
Inge found the aftercare excellent. “Everything was explained well and I was given a very nice card with rules of life and medication instructions for the coming weeks. When I had a question a few weeks later about a spot that had opened up, I was able to send a photo straight away. Within half an hour I was called back with the doctor's advice. That felt very reassuring.”
Although six weeks is recommended for recovery, Inge went back to work half days after three weeks. “I have chronic pain and sometimes I don’t know what normal pain is. But I felt good and thought: why not? Sitting still is not for me.”

Now, a few months later, Inge feels liberated. “I wear normal bras again without cutting straps. 800 to 900 grams were removed and you can tell. Clothes fit better, my shoulders feel lighter and exercising is more enjoyable. For me, this procedure was such a relief. I should have done it twenty years ago.”
