After years of health problems due to her breast implants, Claire (43) decided it was time for a change. She had her implants removed and opted for a breast lift at Aesthetic Center Jan van Goyen.
Claire had been struggling with vague symptoms for years, such as extreme fatigue, having to search for words, forgetfulness, heart palpitations and pain in her joints. She initially did not think of her breast implants as a possible cause. “I got those implants when I was 28, after my first pregnancy,” says Claire. “I wanted to make my breasts fuller because I found them a bit empty at the top.”
The complaints started insidiously, about five years after the implants were placed. “I had never made the connection with my breast prostheses, until the complaints became increasingly worse,” she explains. Claire decided to seek help and ended up with plastic surgeon Joyce Florisson. She took her complaints seriously and referred her to an internist at Medisch Centrum Jan van Goyen.

The internist performed extensive tests. “They took blood and it soon became clear that my symptoms were related to an inflammatory reaction in my body, probably caused by my breast implants,” says Claire. There was even a rheumatoid infection in my blood. The plastic surgeon and internist worked closely together to draw up a treatment plan.
After discussing the options, Claire opted for a explantation, the removal of the implants, combined with a breast lift. “I didn’t want to have something artificial put into my body again. The breast lift felt like a natural and healthy choice.”
The surgery
A few weeks later, the time had come; Claire underwent the surgery at Esthetisch Centrum Jan van Goyen. “I was incredibly nervous,” she admits. “I’m not a hero with medical procedures, but the team put me at ease.” The surgery went well and Claire decided to go home that same evening to recover in her own familiar surroundings.
Recovery went well in general. “The first two weeks were tough, especially sleeping. You have to sleep upright. But after four weeks I felt a lot better.” A small complication – a wound that healed slowly – meant that Claire had to be extra careful. “I learned to really listen to my body and rest when necessary.”
Difference
After the operation, Claire noticed a difference almost immediately. “The fatigue and forgetfulness were much less, my heart palpitations were gone and my skin was radiant again,” she says enthusiastically. The complaints about her eyes, such as dryness and redness, also decreased drastically. “I didn’t expect to feel so much better.”
The choice for a breast lift turned out to be a good one. “The result is beautiful,” Claire proudly says. “I still have a nice cup size and everything feels much more natural. I am very happy with how it looks.”

“Take your complaints seriously and seek the right care. Don’t let them fob you off and choose a clinic that really listens to you. And be critical about what you put in your body. For me, this was the best choice, and I am incredibly grateful that I took that step.”
